im sure this issue has been posted before, but updated responses would be much appreciated

i need to purchase short-barrelled revolver in 357 for ccw/hd

im leaning toward the s&w f-comp 66

what would you consider the best - most accurate, reliable, durable - revolver brand available for ccw/hd?

are there any other brands out there for high end ccw/hd revolvers other than the usual suspects? (s&w, freedom, colt)

thanks

CCW in Chicago? Very cool indeed.

Other guns:

My 2 favorite .357's are a Ruger GP-100 and a S&W model 60. They are respectively the perfect shooter and CCW, IMHO.

If I was limited to one, however, I would choose the Ruger SP-101. It is a 5-shot, compact revolver that has proven to be exceptionally durable. It is larger and heavier than the S&W and looks a bit clunkier, but it is a very high quality piece and still small/light enough for every day carry.

The Ruger GP-100 and S&W 586/686 are the best general purpose .357's IMHO. They both are durable, accurate and reliable as you require, but are also a bit on the large/heavy side for every day CCW IMHO.

First, it's pretty easy to carry a revolver with up to a 4" barrel. Shorter barrels can be more comfortable, but you give up a lttle in accuracy and velocity.

The one that I'd suggest you look at is:

The Dan Wesson small frame or model 15s. Dan Wesson . The big advantage to the DWs is that they are about the most accurate you'll find until you move into the Korth price guns. The barrel is held in tension from both ends and you can adjust the gap for your best performance. In addition, you can buy longer barrels for target shooting or hunting and have the most versatile gun out there. They are reliable and super dependable.

Um? Seems like we just covered this topic~;)

But to answer your question, I like the S&W 2.5" barrel
model 19 (blue or nickel), or its stainless brother the
model 66. "Best" is probably better off left to the
judgement of the user? :( :uhoh: :D

I use a Ruger SP-101 for ccw, have also used my 4" GP-100. Another nice revolver to use is the 2.75" Security Six.

Three inch revolvers are great for HD and CCW, they are not too hard to conceal and don't loose as much velocity as a two inch barrel. Look for a used Smith model 13 or its stainless equivilent the model 65. In the Ruger line a new or used GP 100 in stainless with a 3" barrel and small grip. All these are six shots. My current favorite is the five shot Ruger SP101 with a 3" barrel that I carry using an IWB holster. The others are belt guns IMHO.

Your original choice of the Smith 66 is a fine choice except in my opinion you are better off with a fixed sighted gun for defense purposes, more rugged and in my experience with Rugers and Smiths the factory sight setting is on target.

I agree with Ron, my 3" SP101 has been carried as much as my G26 this winter, depending on what I am wearing and where I am going. It is rugged, reliable, and accurate. It also conceals just fine for me IWB, something some of the wider 6-shooters do not do comfortably for me.

I don't know about being the best but my vote goes to my 3" Sp101 which does a very good job in my Versa Max 2.

I carry my F-Comp opn a daily basis in a IWB Milt Sparks VersaMax2 holster. It is very comfortable and the gun is fantastic. Dennis

SC 360 Scandium 2" .357. Under 1lb fully loaded with 158gr Hydra-shoks.

Light weight rocks in a carry gun. I practice with a .357 gun thats a bit heavier in weight, or use 38 Special wadcutters in the SC360 when punching paper with it.

Hello all.
I am pretty new here, so please excuse the newbie question.
What are CT grips?
A brand name? an abbreviation?
Thanks.

From your post I take it that you want to carry and shoot .357's in your gun. I carry a S&W 640 .357 but use .38+P ammo in it. I think this is the best all around concealed carry revolver. I can obtain good accuracy from it due to the high grip I get on it. The following are what I consider to be the best choices in other configuarations currently in production:

Medium frame 6 shot .357's

Ruger GP100 3" - great compromise for concealed carry and HD purposes if you have appropriate carry method, definitely not a pocket gun.

S&W 66 2 1/2" - one of the best snubbies ever IMHO, this is my gun for HD.

S&W 686 2 1/2" - a bit beefier than the 66 for extra durability.

Small frame 5 shot .357's

S&W 640 - as I already mentioned.

S&W 60 2" or 3" - if you want an exposed hammer.

Ruger SP101 - great gun as well.

I've a set of Crimson Trace Lasergrips on my SC360 Scanduim .357. So far they seem to hold zero well even with the hard kick of 158gr Hydra-shoks in such a light gun.

Great CCW package, but not a lot of fun at the range with it unless I use wimpy loads.
