Hi guys, im fairly new to this site ,and really having fun with it.
Im currently looking to purchase a 44, not sure if im going NIB or a fine used revolver, (i know good deals can be found).
I was hoping i can get some honest suggestion's.
I don't plan on shooting it all that much, i have a gp 100 for the range, but no collection would be complete without a 44.
I dont want to break the bank and im not a gun snob, just looking for a decent da revolver that will last at the range or in the woods.

GP 100 SS 6''
S&W 642
S&W model 10
Rough Rider 22
Black hawk 50 th anniv.
Ruger p85 mII

Are looking for a single action or a da gun? What purpose do you want to put the gun too, hunting? Carry while in the woods? Or just a range gun?

I just posted this in another thread asking a similar question, so I'll just paste it here:

I just ordered this .44 Taurus Tracker from Cabelas for $509. I have this coupon deal I got in the mail where if I buy $500 or more from Cabela's in one purchase, I get $150 in-store credit back (for ammoz).

Its 5-shot, light, slim, very carryable, super-comfy grips, adjustable sights, attractive, ported (louder but better for followup shots) and nice SA trigger (don't shoot these things DA so it's not a big deal for me that the da trigger is heavy).

This gun to me is the best mix of CARRYABLE + LIGHTWEIGHT and MANAGEABLE RECOIL. Much thought went into this gun with the ribber grips and the porting + gas expansion chamber to achieve this.

Only downside to this beauty is that it has a slightly shorter cylinder, so the super high power hunting loads may not fit.

I will have this for the occasional concealed carry for 2 legged predators with .44 spl or lighter .44 mag handloads, and for woods carry with some .44mag jsp.

EDITED TO ADD:
I used to have a GP-100 ss for the same reason. I found I never took it because it was SO FRIGGIN HEAVY, even though I could conceal it if I needed to.

I'm slowly learning that easy to carry guns will get carried, and bigger luggers will be left at home where they do no one any good.

Also, lastly, I would like to add that I would not get an SA revolver for SD. For targets sure. Maybe even for hunting. But I need to know that if I pull the trigger on my gun IT WILL SHOOT. Extra steps outside disengaging safties are not what I want when I need it to go BANG!

Good luck with the Taurus. I researched revolvers for quite some time before purchasing my latest big bore.

I have had a Ruger single six since I was 12 and experienced nothing, but reliability, accuracy and durability so after reading many negative (but some positive) reviews on the Taurus... I went with Ruger Blackhawk 50th Anniversary edition.

I initially wanted DA, however after years of shooting SA, I am pretty effective.

The only down-side to the Ruger Blackhawk 50th was the small grips. Too small for my hands. I luckily found a custom grip woodworker to make me a set of oversized fingergrooved grips for the beauty.

The original purchase price in addition to the custom grips are still in the $600 range and I know the gun will last forever.

I own a Taurus Tracker in .44 Mag so I will throw in my 2 cents on it.

I bought this gun with the intent of shooting mostly .44 Spl in it. I realy don't think the paper and tin cans know the difference between .44 Spl and .44 Magnum, and the Spl's are much more pleasant to shoot.

So it is for me a .44 Spl gun with occasional .44 mag capability. With this in mind it has been a great shooter for me and I realy like this gun. It is one of the smallest frame if not the smallest frame .44 magnums built. About the same size as a S&W L-frame . Makes it lighter, smaller, easier to carry. If I need the .44 Magnum power it is available.

Quality --- Mine is as good as most any average S&W or Ruger I have owned or handled, and I have had a lot of revolvers in my hands over the years. I consider the Taurus Tracker a good value.

So no problem if one decides to buy a Ruger or S&W they are bother very good guns. My post is just a reminder that Taurus can put out a good product as well, and passing on them just because of internet chatter will not necessarily serve you well.

Look around for a good deal and put a nice used S&W model 29 or 629 on layaway.

You'll be glad you did..........trust me. I've had em all.
