I traded for a .22-250 recently and would like to hear about any experience with bullets, primarily for coyotes. It is a Howa with a standard 1-14" twist barrel. 55 gr is probably the heaviest bullet that will stabilize reliabaly and that will work fine for yotes. I would prefer heavier if anyone has had good luck with a specific bullet that will work with that twist.

I've heard good things about Hornadys but haven't tried them in .22.

The rifle is decent. The action is very smooth and the trigger is very good for a factory set-up. The synthetic stock is a bit too flexible but the fit is good. Howa wasn't my first choice but the deal was too good to pass up. :)

hornady v-max. 50 grains. moly or not - i prefer moly in my 22-250, but nekkid bullets do just as well.

Seems to me it's hard to find a "bad" bullet. :)

I've always had good luck with Sierra's 50- to 55-grain stuff. If they still make the 52-grain HPBT, it's a good one. With my Swift, I never had an opportunity on coyotes with them, but they'd shuck a feral housecat at 300 yards.

"feral housecat" ... Ya let a little verbiage slip there, Art. ?

Come to think of it, ours out at the range would probably fit that definition, at least when the sun goes down. ;)

Bear claw bullets are usually pretty tough and stay together. I knew a guy that used a 225 with them to take zebras.

Congratulations on the new rifle!

Do you want to save the pelt? If so, you might try either a really strong bullet to punch straight through (60gr Nosler Partition) or a really explosive bullet to go in and not come out (40gr - 50gr V-Max). Somewhere in between the results might be kind of ruinatious on the pelt.

I'm going with the 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip but have not yet connected with a dog. They just shoot real well and I'll sew the thing back together if I have to.

Aw, Greybeard, they're either bobcats or housecats, to me. Some housecats stay inside, being "putty tat". Others wander around the boonies, and I call those housecats "feral".

"Feral" is another word for "target".

Do you want to save the pelt?

Nope. Varmit control only. Way too many yotes sniffing around the cattle.
I'm leaning towards the 55 gr Hornady. Are you all getting anything heavier to stabilize with the 1-14' twist? All things being equal, I prefer the heaviest bullet that makes sense for any particular critter. No real scientific type reason, just my preference. (some like blondes, some like redheads kinda thing)

If u're interested in going long-range with it u might take a look at the 52 gr, JLK Low Drag (a flat-based VLD). That bullet has a BC of .302, and as far as i know is the highest BC bullet that will stabilize out of that twist.
