Best Deal On .223 Ammo Here

That is a good price these days for brass case .223. However, I bought a thousand rounds of the Wolf Gold and was pretty disappointed to see the bullets seated at slightly varying depths, and also way too many instances of buggered up, slightly folded-in case necks. Based upon my batch, it's cheap by today's standards in more ways than one. If I were in the market for some plinking ammo, I'd try the MHE ammo that Walmart is selling for $9.97/30 rounds (it's 5.56, but my CZs don't care). I bought some of the MHE stuff in 7.62x51 and it's very nice.

If you keep your eyes peeled, there are deals out there. The other day I found 500 rounds of Federal M193 for $157. That's $31.4/round, which is darned near as cheap as I can hand load for these days. That wouldn't be that great a price, but it's the delivered price... no shipping. I'm sure others have found the same. It's the shipping that kills the cost....

Wow, thats the first bad review I've ever heard about this ammo. I'd have contacted them about it. I've got a couple cases and its been flawless so far.

I read the reviews and they were pretty much all good, like you said, so maybe somebody boxed up their QC rejects for me.... LOL They aren't all bad by any means, but a couple out of most boxes of 20 look just a bit questionable, with the odd one now and then even worse. That shouldn't happen these days.

BigBore45... I could load cheaper than $.30/round (and sometimes do), but I prefer to use really premium bullets. I generally don't load FMJs, but HP match rounds or varmint rounds. Those bullets do bring the cost up.

While 223 can be had cheaply, I'm buying bulk and saving my reloading components for the droughts. Honestly, I can't reload accurate 223 for much less than I can buy cheap brass cased ammo AND my reloads are more expensive than steel.

Sure, the ammo isn't as good as my reloads tailored to my guns, but if I'm just plinking/practicing, MOA isn't necessary.

You got a point, Arizona... my problem is, I get anal about plinking at the range and I find it frustrating when I can't hold a group under about 1.5" - 2" with most of the M193 or M855 stuff, much less the even more random PMC or bulk FMJs of dubious quality. I feel like I'm just pulling the trigger to feel the recoil (which isn't totally unfulfilling)... it's so much better shooting the hand loads and really hitting what's under the reticle.

If it was 30 years ago and I was a starving student, I'd worry more... but now I can afford shooting better stuff, so I do. I'm lucky in that regard.... plus, hand loading to me is more than half the sport, so I'm not just loading to save money.

I'm off topic. Sorry. I'll be quiet now.

^^^ Good points. I enjoy reloading when I know it will matter. I don't buy factory ammo for any of my bolt guns or handguns. (accuracy/low-power loads)

I've been caught in a bad spot over the last year or two -- not willing to pay inflated prices for factory ammo, but not enough reloading components available to keep up with my shooting. I've had to slow down a bit in order to not run out.

While it can be had cheaply, I'm hoping to buy 1-2k factory rounds per paycheck and primers/powder when they're available. I'll treat them like a car payment. ;)
