I'd like to get some opinions and recommendations for factory 9mm ammo for self defense purposes. I realize that allot are good, but which ones do you think are exceptional? Any data out there on this?

Welcome Dan-E-Boy.

The BEST 9mm bullet is the Black Rhino bullet. You don't even need to shoot these, they just scare the bad guys away with an angry stare.

Actually, any modern hollowpoint bullet will work if it hits the target, don't focus so much on brand of ammo but spend your time constantly practicing at the range. One box of $40-50 ammo sitting at home because you don't want to shoot them regularly won't do you any good. It is better to regularly shoot more affordable HP bullets in the hundreds every year. (I like to shoot 500 rounds of new HP ammo at first and then try to shoot a box or 2 every month in addition to FMJ loads as part of SD training).

best round for defense is the one that hits its mark... now for stopping power and wound cavity thats a different ball game... i really like the speer gold dot

There are a lot of EXCELLENT 9MM defensive ammo available from Federal, Speer, Corbon, Winchester, etc. so it's really up to the indivudal to select which one is the most reliable in their particular gun.

I know I know someone will make claims of one being superior over the other but so far the crime reports I've read involving 9mm the high-end quality defensive rounds all appear to do the job.

I carry Speer Gold Dot +p 124gr in my CZ75b. I chose them because we were issued Gold Dot .38s for our Smith & Wessons when I was with the armored car carrier. If its good enough for them, its good enough for me. Its just a personal choice, not based on any scientific data. Any modern hollowpoint will work though, as long as you hit your target.

124 gr Gold Dot +P from either SPEER or Double TAP Ammo (hotter) for me.
A load that has and is still working well for the NYPD and other users.

Like the other products from DT. You don't have to be a cop or jump thru hoops to get high velocity 9mm ammo that some companies list as LE Only.

I carry Black Hills 124gr +P JHP, but any modern hollow point made by a reputable ammo company will do the trick.

Don't trust any ammo for self defense until you fired at least two fulls mags (or more) thru your gun with no problems. Some guns will choke on one type of JHP and shoot just find with another type.

I use 124+p golddots either from doubletap or speer and 147 ranger T.both have good reputation for preformance and are extreamly accurate in my guns.

For a long time, I wouldn't carry anything except Speer Gold Dot 124 gr, standard pressure. I used that load once in a small 9mm to kill an active but crippled deer on the side of the road, and it was instantly, impressively effective. So I carried that in any 9mm I had.

Still have half of my magazines loaded with it. The other half are loaded with 147 gr HP WWB. That works well, too, and is a lot easier to get my hands on.

Have to agree with the Speer Gold Dot fans. 124 gr. +P is THE TICKET in my view for a 9mm pistol than can comfortably run it. Standard pressure SGD suits me fine for those that can't.

I preffer Gold Dot 124gr +P

Ranger talon (tan box) in +P version is good stuff

Corbonds hot +P or +P+ (whatever it is called-LOL) 115gr load

Federal 9BP is kind of a gold standard

I like the GD +P because I've shot a ton of it in several guns and a few critters with it and know it shoots and works well. 9mm and .40 seem to do better to my mind with faster lighter fodder. Slow and heavy effectiveness means get the .45 out It can do lighter and faster but as a bud once said ".45 is all about 230grains" 9mm is all about speed...as long as you have a quallity HP bullet being driven just find a load your gun likes and stick with it and you'll be fine.

My "classic" Hi Power, purchased almost forty years ago, is loaded with fourteen rounds of Speer standard pressure 124 gr Gold Dots. I would use +p if it were a later model Hi Power.
Cordially, Jack

I have two different 9mm guns, one in the nightstand, one on the hip. One carries 124gr Remington Golden Sabers. The other carries 124gr Hornady TAP FPD. I got the Golden Sabers because I got them at a great price and I got the Hornadys because I heard they're quite accurate.

One thing I really like about the Hornandys is the black shell coating. It's much slicker than standard brass, so I *think* it should feed more reliably. The XTP bullet is a weird shape, so make sure your gun feeds it reliably.
