I have a 300 wby mag in a Remington 700. I laid it down several years ago for hunting whitetails due to the excessive damage it caused. I later learned that I was using too light of a bullet. (Hornady SST 165 gr) Occasionally I didn't even get penetration through the chest cavity on a 100 pound deer! After I got a little smarter I realize I need a strong bullet for penetration at those speeds. Any suggestions for an elk load? As for whitetails, I'm sold on my trusty 30-06.

Never hunted elk, but from everything I've read most prefer a premium bullet like a Nosler Partition, a Swift A-Frame, or a Barnes TSX. They'll all hold together good and have high weight retention, which you want for elk and moose sized game. The Barnes will have near 100% weight retention. I'd probably go with a 180 grain bullet in one of those three.

I Sierra GK 180's in 300 Roy, 300 Win and WSM. They have all killed elk well.

I don't personally shoot Nosler Partitions, but they ARE the standard which others are compared to. I shoot Hornady GMX's and they are nasty bullets. I like the Barnes MRX's and TTSX's also.

That's odd. I've taken nearly a dozen big game animals (deer, ram and boar) with a .300 Wea Mag, using hand loaded 150 grain projectiles. The accuracy and penetration resulted in instantaneous one-shot-kills. Furthermore, when firing into the chest cavity, the projectile always took out about 3" of the far side rib cage. I would suggest investigating those projectiles for possible defect. My favorites were the Speer Hot Core, and the Nosler (BTBT, and SPBT).

JMHO,

I think I would shoot 150gr Accubonds. I have a bunch of them loaded up and they shoot great and hit hard. I have taken a few mule deer with them and wouldn't hesatate to use them on a elk. I have also shot elk with 150 gr sierras. Hit the bull in the front shoulder and it shattered the shoulder, took out the heart and lungs, then broke the far shoulder and found the bullet just under the hide. I am a fan of speed and devastation and not just poking holes.

If it was shooting the SST's well, I would think the GMX's would be the way to go.
