Hello all,

I am a resident of NC, and have been to most of the gun shows in my state. Though nice revolvers can be found for very good deals, they are relatively few and far between. I end up passing on the vast majority of S&Ws, Tauris and Rugers I come across because either the asking price is outrageous (ie, S&W Model 10-6 for $750, Taurus Model 66 for $500, Charter Arms .38 snub for $550) or they are completely beat to crap (A 2.75" Ruger Speed Six with about .006" of endshake in the cylinder). Or both (that shot to crap Speed Six was $475, IIRC)

In fact, most of the revolver purchases I have made in the past few years have come from one dealer out in the western part of the state.

Last year I took a couple of revolvers to Matt Almeda (out of Suffolk VA, IIRC) to have some work done, and the Hampton Gun Show was the same day. So I dropped in to check it out. I was amazed at the relatively high percentage of revolvers that were there, as compared to ALL the NC gun shows I've been to. Not only that, most were priced so well that even having to pay for shipping and a $25 FFL fee on my end still made the prices far better than most anything in NC.

I ended up buying a 2.5" S&W 66-1 (P&R) for $430, plus $15 shipping and $25 transfer fee. The best price I had seen on a 2.5" 66 in NC in the previous 2 years was $550 for a real beater. So I was all over that 66. One table had dozens of Ruger Police Service Sixes much like my own for $250 to $275. I recall seeing a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag for $400, and a nice 4" S&W Model 10-5 for $200. If I my budget had been higher, there were probably 3 other wheelies I would have purchased.

But doing research online, the Hampton gun show is only considered so-so by VA residents.

So I ask you guys that may have experience with this, which gun shows in VA would be the best place to locate nice used S&Ws, Taurus and Ruger Revolvers? I've heard Chantilly is nice.

And yes, I realize shipping and FFL fees are involved for me as an out of state resident. But like I said, the deals and selection I saw in Hampton compared to my local prices more than offset that and gas expenses.

Quite frankly the terms "good" and "gunshow" don't go together any more.
I attend gun shows in a few states. I haven't seen a good deal in a few years.
As for revolvers there are more coming out of the closet lately.
You're seeing more of them in the movies and on Tv so people are coming back to them.
I've seen more Pythons in the last year than in the last 10.
Hang out in parking lots.

I don't know how good it would be, but there's one in Fredericksburg Va this weekend.

Hampton is the better of the shows in the Tidewater area. Matt Almeda is a great guy and prices are very decent. The Virginia Beach shows are always small and the Downtown Norfolk shows aren't even worth going to. I too have heard Chantily is nice, especially the 3 day shows.

No problem! IMO, a fair price for a Model 10 these days should start at around $225 to $250 for a 6" or 4". Expect to pay a slight premium for a 5" (say, $25), and an even higher premium for a 2" or 3" ($300 to $350). But I have seen a bunch of the same model 10s over and over at the same gun shows from the same dealers for upwards of $500 :barf:; you can get a 4" S&W 19 or 66 for that price if you are patient. The Ruger Sixes seem to sell for around $300 to $350 with a 4" barrel and closer to $400 with a 2.75". Speed Sixes with their round butt do seem to command a $50 higher premium. However, most of the ones I've seen have been completely shot to crap. They are tough guns for sure, but not invincible. Seems the Ruger image of industructibility leads folks to load up with homemade sticks of atomic dynamite and blast the living tar out of them.

Taurus revolver prices are all over the place, depending on the model. I keep my eyes open for a 66 or 669 and their used prices match or exceed new 66s ($400 and up), so I just pass on them.

Needless to say, $750 for a plain jane S&W 10-6 is ludicrous. That same shop had the Charter Arms .38s for $550. I wish I had written down all the ripoff prices, it was rather hilarious. I seem to recall a Remington 870 Express for $600. I swear I smelled marijuana in the air in that shop; apparently they were spoking a metric buttload of it.

"Chantilly!!- Near Dulles Airport "--Big gun show, but I haven't seen a deal in several years. Heck, I haven't seen fair prices in several years......

Guns and Ammo Warehouse in Manassas has about 10 used S&W 38 specials. They probably were used by a security guard company. They were selling for around $250.

There is certain gent that usually brings nice quality stuff to local shows. His name is Randy Clark of Clark Distributing Co., Inc 540-777-4999. I would call ahead he might have something you're looking for and can bring it along to gun show for you to see.

Tip for attending the Chantilly show: If you are (or want to be) an NRA member paying annual dues, stop at the NRA table next to the entrance. Paying for a one year membership at $30 gets you a $5 savings on your NRA dues, and into the show for free (saving an additional $12 daily fee). (And a free NRA baseball cap.) If you fill out the form with the matching info to your current membership (or even better, list your member #) the dues will add another year to whatever time you have been paid up. When I am paid up several years ahead, sometimes my wife attends the show where I buy knives and ammo. Last time I went, it seems my brother was down from CT visiting his brother and went to the show. At least, that is what I told the guy at the table who looked at the form and asked why I was in town from CT.

Guns and Ammo Warehouse that MAKster mentioned also has several Ruger Security-Six in the same condition and for about the same price. If I didn't have so many 38/357 revolvers already (7 and a 357 maximum barrrel for the Contender) one of them would have come home with me by now.
