I am currently using a 1.09 bottom disk and a 76 top disk, but my loads seem stronger then factory loads, any one have a suggestion on a little ligher load, give me disk size. maybe a 1.02 and .82? thanks

What powder are we talking about? It all starts with a recommeded load for a particular powder you intend to use. Then you figure the throw you need for that powder. Even then you need to check it with a scale.

YOu must measure your throws with an avoirdupois scale before you load any cartridges! The Lee disc system drops powder based upon volume and the Lee engineers have handily done the math of volume vs density to give you an approximate powder throw- but it is never 100% accurate, and Lee themselves say it is not on purpose!

Get a check scale, measure your throws, and consult a reloading data guide to find out what you should be using in your cases with which bullet you choose.

I can't stress that enough!

Depends on powder, get the adjustable charge bar and double bump for .223 and you can get the charge within .10 gr.double check on your scale.

I think the Auto Disc throws best when the two discs are pretty close to the same size. You're throwing 1.85 now, so instead of a 1.09 and a .76, try something in .95 and .90 range (I don't recall the disc volume numbers offhand so I'm just throwing those out as an example).

But I'll agree with shootinxd that the adjustable charge bar is a better option since the discs never seem to throw the right charge. The adjustable charge bar can be used as your top disc and you can tweak the charge as needed. I use it in the double disc configuration.

I am using varget powder, did not think about using a charging bar, will check it out. when weighing the charge it comes out to 25.5 grs.

I'd be concerned about using an adjustable charge bar on top of a disk. As I recall the Lee instructions for a double disk setup, if the two disks are set to different sizes, the top disk must be smaller than the bottom disk. This insures that no powder is left on the "edges" of the bottom disk to cause variations in load weight.

The mouth of the adjustable bar is wider than virtually all of the holes in the disks, so an adjustable bar on top seems likely to leave variable amounts of powder un-dropped.

I agree that the adjustable charge bar is a terrific improvement for the Lee measures. I use one in each of the measures on my various Loadmaster toolheads. I was responding to the suggestion to use an adjustable bar as the top element in a double disk setup, which I think MIGHT cause a problem for the reason I mentioned.

In the case of using a single charge bar for loading rifle cartridge loads, though, I'm not sure it would have as much volume as a double disk setup using the larger disk openings. Admittedly the double disks can only produce stepped variations between loads, but the various combinations of disk openings really can produce fairly fine steps, and probably will allow larger volume charges to be dropped with the Auto-Disk measures than can be done with an adjustable charge bar.

Personally, I tried using the double disk setup for 223 but eventually gave up and went to a standalone Redding measure. I use 50-case loading blocks (usually 4 of 'em at a time) to do the powder charging, then run the charged cases through a Loadmaster's final 2 stages (bullet seater and factory crimp die).
