I have had both the Xd9 and M&P9. I definitely preferred and kept the Xd9. It is about as ambidestrous as you'll need. Slide stop/release is the only thing non ambi but its a very minor inconvenience as you can just slingshot the slide when chambering.

The M&P 9s trigger pull just wasn't doing it for me but it does have an ambi slide release.

You will find most pistols, while "known" to be right handed, are actually left handed guns.

For example, the AK-47 is a left handed gun. SIGs are also left handed guns.

A magazine release on the left side is easy for a left handed shooter to use...just use your index finger.

S&W 6906 , has an ambi safety & decocker if you need it . The CZ 85 is ambi for C&L with the safety , no decocker.

Took he and his wife to a dealer today, they both really liked the XDM9mm, M&P 9mm, and FNP 9mm. The XDM was too much for them ($649 WOW!) and the only reason why they chose the FNP 9mm over the M&P was because it was a TRUE ambi pistol with ambi safety/decocker, mag release, and slide release. They also liked that the grips could be changed and that it came with three mags not having to send off a rebate to get two extra mags like the M&P. It was also cheaper :). The FN was $499 and the M&P was $539.

We left and went straight to the range and immediately they knew they made the right choice after firing two mags. She was able to get about 3" group from 10 yards (not bad for a 1st time shooter!) and he was bulls-eying everything. I was quite impressed for two new shooters and after I fired off a mag I was also impressed with the FNP. I dont own one but I may real soon! THIS GUN IS A SHOOTER plain and simple. I have encouraged them to take a handgun self defense class and shoot as much as often. I feel good to know I have helped arm law abiding citizens and aid them in making a decision in buying a pistol that best fits them. Thank you all for the suggestions.
