Best long range round for .30-06

I think the OP just wanted to know if his Ruger 30'06 could be competitive in long range target shoots. The simple answer is yes.
CA_sharpshooter, you need to try competition style bullets to see if your rifle shoots them well.
The Berger line of bullets are used successfully in competition and provide some of the highest BC in their VLD style bullets for their weights.
If you can achieve good results with match style bullets, then go have fun.

Would an '06 really be able to compete with a .30 BR for short range benchrest?

NO but if the rifles and ammunition were built with the same degree of precision would the 06'es groups be 4 or 5 times larger?

No they would not, the differences would likely best be measured in hundredths of an inch.

How would you explain the dominance of the 6mm PPC for SRBR?

in a game where thousandths matter you do everything you can. BUT lets face it there's also a very large Lemming or "me to" component to factor in as well

CA Sharpsooter,

The most accurate hunting round I have shot out of my Remington M700 30-06 has been the Federal 165 grain Sierra GameKing BTSP (catalologue # P3006D) This routinely hits 1/2"-3/4" at 100yds. I found that in all my 30-06 rifles the 165 grain gives the best combination of accuracy and knockdown power (ft lb energy) at longer distances.

Happy hunting,

"Monte"

I've had the same results as Monte. Great groups at 100 and avg. a little less than 4" groups at 300 with a Savage sporter barrel.

I watched two people "debunk" the oft time claimed lower drag of Berger's VLD bullets to all others some years ago. Both shot twenty .308 Win. rounds through two chronographs about 993 yards apart. One chrono was 10 feet from the muzzle and the other (with 3-foot square screens) was 10 feet in front of the 1000 yard target. Both shot ten 190 Sierra HPMK's and ten Berger 185 VLD's. Both types left around 2550 fps.

The VLD's had a greater velocity drop at the target than the HPMK's did. Sierra's bullet had less drag than Bergers and lost less velocity. Real proof that perhaps VLD means "very lousy drag." (We laughed about that.) Aside from this, both shot with the same accuracy; Bergers do shoot very well indeed.

I'll never been shooting past 400 yards, I run SMK 168's in my .308, with either 42.3 grains of H-4895, or 44.5 grains of IMR 4064, both work great. My best group so far at 200 yards, is 1.25", Remington 700 SPS Tactical, 20" heavy barrel.
