I figure that with all I travel, I might as well get a permit to carry, but since I live in IL, and can't get one here, I need to apply for a non-resident elsewhere.

I've heard people advocate Florida and Pennsylvania, but I have never obtained a CCW, so I really don't know where to apply for one. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks.

New Hampshire= No test, $20/4 years.
Coverage not as god as some, but you don't have to travel there to take their shooting test, etc.

Florida has reciprocity with 29 states:

Alabama, Alaska*, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont*, Virginia, and Wyoming.

Alaska and Vermont do not require a license to carry.

If you are active duty military, do you have to travel to Florida to take the shooting test?

LISTEN--if you are in IL or WIS--PA will issue you a permit for 25.00 and there is NO TRAINING or SHOOTING required. Just send your DL / FOID and the 25 bones to the Centre County SD.

About 22 states, but easier and faster than anywhere else for IL and WIS residents. PA law requires that non-residents send copies of CCW issue by their home state unless the state is NON-issue.

FLA and Utah are more comprehensive--but PA is good in MO and Indy.

If i have a fla non-resident license, do I need the NICS check for local (texas) firearm purchases? Out of state purchases, if say I'm traveling?

TIA

Here is the link. It took six days. Send Blago a copy of the check you sent to PA because he didn't want your money to stay here in your home state!

I too am in IL and got mine from PA. Mine took only six or seven days to get back to me. Super fast!

ALL IL residents should get one just on principle. I find it beyond ridiculous that I am issued a CCW from PA (I believe it's 17 states it's good in) and all because the state I live in now won't issue me one or allow me to protect myself. I just love IL.

Here is the list of states that recognize PA.

Alaska
Arizona
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Missouri
Montana
North Carolina
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Wyoming

Nope. They will accept a military ID, and even a DD-214 from veterans. I've been out of the Army for nearly 40 years and they accepted a copy of my DD-214 as prooof of firearms training.

That alone makes it MUCH better than Utah (for veterans). No travel required, no classes required.

While a class is required for the Utah permit, there are approved instructors nationwide. There is no live-fire requirement. The fee for the initial permit is $65.25 and the permit is good for 5 years. Renewal costs $10.00 and just involves sending a check and a 1-page renewal application.

As far as I know there is only one Utah-approved instructor in my state. I would have to travel an hour to the class, and it's an all-day class that costs (IIRC) $150, then I drive an hour to get home.

For Florida I walked down the hall and made a photocopy of my DD-214. Florida gets me just as many states as Utah, I believe. For me it was a no brainer, but if you like taking classes when you don't have to, by all means go for Utah.

I also am from Illinois and Penn. is a good first choice because it is cheap and fast. After that Fla. and Utah are the best, they have the most states but not the same states. If you want to go to Florida you must have Fla. I also travel to Minnesota which recognizes Utah but not Fla. I have those three pluss NH, Conn. and Maine.
These other states will be helpfull to your quest for CCW. My wife(Utah and Penn.) both have fairly common names and both had some problems because of that. In each case the states helped us straighten out the confusion and were more that happy to issue the CCW. I realise that is a completley foreign idea to people from the repressive state of Illinois. Jim.
