Hello, looking to get a new holster. My main concern is that of retention. As far as I can tell, the Blade-tech's and Comp-tac's, while highly regarded, lack a retention system. The Blackhawk Serpa system has its obvious patrons and those who would never use it. What makes a Comp-tac or Blade-tech worth the extra money over a cheaper Blackhawk? Should I be concerned about retention with either of the aforementioned holsters?

For a Sig SP2022, BTW

Thanks in advance,

Josh

My Blade-Tech paddle holster does, in fact, have retention screws for adjustment. My Comp-Tac CTAC holsters do not have such devices. Neither holster system has ever presented me with any retention problems what so ever. FWIW!

My OWB choice

I use the "Belt Slide Holster" with a P239 (40 or SAS 9mm). It stays in place well with the belt on the outside holding it in and it doesn't appear to be a holster when I'm not carrying for any reason. I will say there's one draw back with jeans and that when the brass rivet rubs the front of the slide, so that's when I carry the 40 since it's got some holster wear.

I've never had any problems with my Fobus holster. Inexpensive and works well. I personally prefer leather and have several from El Paso Saddlery. They have a metal band in the muzzle that you can bend to control the retention. I have a new one from Tagua Gunleather for my CW9. The pistol hasn't fallen out yet.

i use both the Comp-Tac Settable Cant Paddle and the Blackhawk CQC Serpa for my Sig 220ST...also fits my alloy 220 and my 226ST

i've been very happy with the Serpa as the lock is very secure and natural to release, it takes no additional movement over my natural draw stroke. the drawback of the Serpa is that is sticks out quite a bit if i'm concealing with it after a class. it is my primary teaching holster.

the Comp-Tac holds the gun higher and tighter to the body for more discreet concealed carry. the retention is via 2 tension screws in the body. it also offers a very smooth draw.

the difference in speed of draw between the 2 has more to do with holster position than their retention system

I have several of the cheap Uncle Mikes molded holsters from CDNN Investments ($15?). They work very well for the price. They are secured by two tenstion screws like the Comp-Tac. I will say that the Comp-Tac's are a thicker.. probably more durable material over the long haul and depending on your daily use, but they are 4-5 times as much too. Blackhawk and Comp-Tac are very well regarded.

Don Hume. I ordered a JIT Slide and have been lovin' it. :D I like the looks of the 721OT for autos, too, especially ones with decockers that can dig into skin.

The JIT slide is a molded holster and gun retention hasn't been a problem. They do offer a thumb snap version of the 721, though, and I'd get that if I carried a 1911, snap in front of the hammer.

I don't know what your experience with kydex holster is, but your pistol isn't coming out of a quality kydex holster unless it is pulled out.

If you are a law enforcement officer or open carry, you may need a retention device, otherwise I think you will find the regular Blade-Tech or Comp-tac holsters will retain your pistol just fine.

I have a Raven Concealment Phantom holster for my 1911. You can turn that holster upside down and shake it all you want, it is not coming out unless you grab the pistol and pull.

Galco COP holsters:

I have one for my glocks, one for my M&P's, and one for my 1911's.

Retention strap, and doesn't care how long the slide is. It's the best investment if you own several similar guns. ie, I own a G22, and G23, and a G27. They all fit in this holster.

I like the Blackhawk SERPA system myself for an OWB. To me it's the best holster concept I've ever seen. While I like Bianchi OWB stuff with the snap retention, that button with the SERPA is so quick a release, and it's so comfortable for my preferred means of carrying OWB slightly back on hip, high riding, with a slight forward cant angle.... yeah.
