Best pistol for the Mrs

Wow, lots of input! Didn't have much of a chance to check this thread over the weekend. A while ago my wife has fondled a Kahr P40 and wasn't too enthused with it (couldn't shoot it, just hold). There was a S&W that she did seem to like at the same gun show that we saw the Kahr, though I can't remember which one it was. She doesn't like the look of the Glocks, and though she really hasn't handled them, the Glock trigger turns her off. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Glocks myself, though I've only put 5 rounds through one (a guy at the range with one recognized me from church that morning and let me try it). From what she's said I think an autoloader is what she really wants (something about "I don't want a revolver").

I'll have her check out the P232/239, and the Ladysmith (auto and wheel), plus the SP101, though I doubt she'll go for the revolvers as noted above. Most of the list from mr_dove will also be explored.

If you get your wife an auto, as opposed to a revolver, make sure she can rack the slide, load the clip, etc. Everything soup to nuts. Heck, if she is even willing to clean it, that's a plus too! :what:

This is true especially if she is looking at a .40 or .45. Not everyone can handle FTF's from those.

Be careful if she picks the gun and you buy it. Can create a classic "strawman violation" and get you and your friendly dealer in a heap of trouble. You can pay for it, but if its being bought for her, she needs to fill out the yellow form and have the background check done on her name!

BATF ran a "sting" like this at some gunshows a few years ago, couple comes in, "wife" picks out a gun, he buys it and hands it to her as they leave. Dealer is busted. Don't know about any convictions actually obtained, but definitely bad PR for the gunshows!

Loading a mag is not a problem, nor should be racking the slide (my Ruger at least is not THAT tight). It's certainly easier for me to rack the slide, but then it's also easier for me to open the pickle jars :p

This weekend we were going to go to the range and at least have her try the Ruger so that, until she gets her own, if an emergency came up, she would know how it all worked. Unfortunatly we just got too busy and that never happened.

Wally, a gift is legit. As long as she doesn't ever give him money for the gun, there's no legal problem. That said, when we buy the pistol, it'll be her deal, and she'll plop down the credit card, or cash, or whatever.

Yes a gift or subsequent resale to a third party is legit, however, how long you, as the yellow form buyer, has to "own" it before you can give it away, or how many guns you can re-sell per unit time without being accused of being an unlicensed dealer is subject to the interpretive whims of the ATF!

Be careful out there!

Glad to see you intend to have her fill out the paperwork, definitely the safest way to go.
