Not all local stores are as fair as yours seems to be. There's one small shop where I live that claims to price their guns 10% over cost, and they do really have good prices and will price match...and every single time I'm there (which is often because its a hardware store) there's someone buying a gun. But most of the other shops around me are pricey and the guys behind the counter like to make recommendations based on their favorite brands, facts be damned.

I generally check Armslist when I'm trying to find something specific. But I'm more than happy to buy a used gun too. For good "new" gun deals I recommend following this thread on Reddit:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/gundeals/

Some real gems pop from time to time, and if you're patient eventually someone will post a killer deal they ran across on a .223 or .22.

Update on this thread. I have handled a Ruger 10/22 and so that’s why I didn’t mind buying online. I bought a used Ruger 10/22 tactical FDE on guns.com in “excellent” condition. The original price was $200 but was able to offer it down to $175 and was accepted. Thanks all for the replies and inputs!

I have gotten quite a few good deals off Armslist. If you live in a free state, look into it.

This is why the advice from that old song is still valid, "You better shop around!"

Also an update I got a Thompson center compass in 223/5.56 for $240 new. I would say What do y’all think? Used Ruger 10/22 tactical offered 175 but shipping brought it to $200 and Thompson compass for 220 but shipping $240. They ain’t winning any beauty contests but I’m sure they’ll get the job done. Plus being transferred to a low price FFL, $15 for long guns. All good to be brutally honest though on your opinion.

Yes Binghamton, there is another member near you that hunts. I hunted with Troy fairweather and highland lofts this past season. What are you using your new rifles for.

That’s awesome! I’m definitely more of a small game hunter so my 22 will be for tree rats and rabbits 223 when I have to lay the smack down on some good game like yotes gophers etc

I shoot here it's 300 meters to the berm before the tree line. Square deal sportsman association. I shoot my m11 savage in 223 and 700 rem 7mm08 all year to prep for deer season.

Budsgunshop. Ordered a taurus tx22 in green splatter at 11 today, received shipping tracking number a second ago. Figuring tax, transfer fee and shipping I saved a little over 80 on a 260 dollar gun. I am all for locals but I still search for wider selection and price.

The correct answer is "all the above". Sometimes the best deal is on a website auction or other, sometimes the best deal is at a local gun store. And sometimes the best deal is at a gun show or pawn store.

You gotta seek and look around, thankfully most of it can be down at home in front of your keyboard.

If there's something particular that you're interested in, a flyer at your local range or gun club letting people know could be a good place. I hate to be a vulture, but there are sometimes people that could use the money and are willing to part with something for a very good price. Years ago I picked up a pre micro groove barrel marlin 30/30 for $80, I think it was; and on another occassion, I picked up a Colt Mustang .380 for $250. Oh, I also picked up an Enterprise wide body .45 with 6 mags for $500.

I think it’s usually by state. Indiana requires sales tax on internet purchases

Guys talk about a great deal, but neglect shipping, transfer fees, and tax (if it applies)

MO apparently still has not done the internet sales tax thing. I recently bought a RAP 9 from CDNN. I paid $300 + $4.95 shipping(signature required) + $20 FFL transfer fee. $325 total, no tax.
