Youth gun fustration

Today we finally got a little bit of time to go out and burn some powder. It was great.

There were a few minor challenges to get to this point. Most of those challenges being a cost of time and money, but no big deal. I bought the gun new, it had no sights nor provisions for sights, so I bought picatinny bases. Then I still needed an optic so I thought hard about what the gun would be used for and decided low or no magnification and simple sight was the right way to go for the youngsters. As I poured through options I began to consider the dreaded scope shuffle and ensuing sighting in of multiple rifles which were already set up and sighted, but then I thought of my beloved AR scope and it’s lone downfall of not being shake-awake which is of no consequence for a hunting scope. It was perfect, and would only require 1 gun to be re-sighted.

I now have my old AR optic which is an Sig Romeo MSR on this gun which wasn’t easy. The Romeo MSR didn’t come with a low mount, but the Sig romeo5 I just bought to put on the AR (shake awake for defensive carbine makes sense in my mind) so I swapped mounts around as
I swapped optics. Straightforward swap except everything tightens down to a friction fit and has to be pulled apart by hand during which I had a hand slip and had a fingernail rip off in the quick in the process. It’s sharp folks… anyways, the Romeo MSR is absolutely perfect for this role.

Powder… slightly shorter barrel than normal, running a reduced charge to keep recoil down, and in a brand new gun. I decided to try a cleaner alternative and stumbled across 777 starfire pellets at 1/2 price. 3 charges is supposedly equivalent to 100 gr of black powder, so 2 pellets is in the 67 gr ballpark. I was looking for 60 gr for the kids so this hit close enough to that mark. I’m glad I didn’t rely heavily on the people whining online about trouble with ignition, because I don’t have any.

Bullets, same deal as the powder. Last years clearanced items still have the half price tags. SOLD. 250 gr sabots 20 per pack for $8 a pack. Not much hesitation there. It’s the same bullet I used for 44 mag, and the same sabot I used with my inlines before I sold them. Being on familiar ground is comforting, especially when it’s cheap.

Those pesky 209 primers… yeah, none for sale in sight. I had some tucked away for loading 410s for the kids so a partial pack got scavenged.

With everything necessary assembled it was a waiting game for schedules to work out. It happened today so we made it happen. First I resighted the AR with the Romeo 5 on it. 6 shots in and it was on at 25 yards. Good enough for a home defense gun. The muzzleloaders maiden voyage went almost as well. Such is the same when you prepare well by boresighting before final firing to prove the bore sight. About 8 shots in and the dot was hovering about 1/2 inch below the point of impact. I don’t know velocity as I don’t have a chrono but I’m assuming a 35ish yard zero would be an inch low at 50 and maybe 3 inches high at 100. I’ll prove that out one afternoon soon, but for now it’s a safe bet and we are definitely accurate enough to hunt out to 50 yards.

The little blonde chatterbox absolutely rocked the whole shebang today. At 11 yrs old she was loading, shooting, and calling her shots like a champ. She never hit more than 2 inches off of bullseye including her first shot when she was still scared of it. The thing that made me most proud was the 3rd shot when the nerves were gone and she said “dad, I’m kinda wobbly but I try to shoot when I wobble over the spot, but I know I just shot too early and it was a little bit down and right” sure enough she was a touch low and almost 2 inches right. Then she burned up the last of my 223 ammo just for fun, gun cocked at about a 30 degree cant and rapid fire just shredding the coke box I had set up as a target. She’s not mine biologically, but she has got my shooting skillset and a little bit more. I was probably 16 before I could do what she did today. She made me proud, but she told me not to post pictures until she kills a deer.

Pick up some 62gr 223 Federal Fusion MSR.
I've killed 2 Deer with this round both were DRT - Dead Right There.

Probably not what you want to hear but with inflation over the last few years $7-800 for a new gun really isn't that crazy. Unfortunately kids outgrow youth guns pretty quick.

A standard AR with an adjustable stock will probably get you the most mileage over the years.

Late to the party but when I went through this with my kids I decided to get a ruger american compact.

A guy could also use a standard rifle and then buy a compact stock from thr manufacturer or Boyd's.

Absolutely wonderful conclusion, @WestKentucky !
A glorious and inspiring tale. Well done, Dad.
