Best place to get a Mauser action?

Where is the best place to buy a Mauser 98 style action for the purpose of building up a nice sporter? I'd like something fairly inexpensive, standard Mauser 98 in all the critical dimensions, and that won't require hacking up an intact historical piece.

The best place to find them is about 0" behind a mauser barrel and around 0" in front of a mauser stock. I think you can find them 0" above a mauser trigger too, but you'll have to check around to be sure.

Big 5 carries Mausers on occasion. The Turkish 38 is a cheap 98 that has little collector interest, but most were actually made in Germany before 1910 and are very well made. The VZ 24 is another great action that can be found without too much trouble. There are also online surplus dealers, but you would need an FFL to receive the rifle and the costs can add up. I would stay away from the Yugoslavian 24 and 24/47, they are intermediate length and stocks and mounts don't always fit. Good luck, I have a VZ 24 in 6.5x55mm in a Boyd's stock that is a great rifle.

Seriously though, the cheapest place to buy one might be on a mil-surp rifle, never shopped around, but I suspect they're a lot higher if they come without a gun attached. Many of the mil-surps out there aren't in a good enough condition to be considered "historical pieces", but from what I understand, the bolts will last forever.

I have bought VZ 24 actions from smiths for $125 to $200 or so, depending on what work (trigger guard thining, etc.) has already been done. These can be kind of rough looking, and they will require a lot of work (usually by the smith who sold it to you, I think they see it as a loss leader). But you are assured that you didn't destroy any vital piece of military history and you eventually wind up with a first rate sporter.

By the time you have bent the bolt handle, changed the safety, drilled the reciever for a scope, polished and reblued, ect, you can have more in a old Mauser then a modern bolt action ready to go.

Ol` Joe, my grandfather was a gunsmith. I inherited a bunch of his tools and I've bought a few of my own. Building a sporter won't cost me much more than parts and time.

A few examples of what I've got:

• Vertical Milling Machine
• Lathe
• Drill Press
• Fixture and tooling for installing M.70 style safeties on Mausers
• Jig and heatsink for welding bolt handles
• Numerous chamber reamers
• Stock inletting and checkering tools
• Action wrench and barrel vice.
• Heat Treat Oven

As for rebluing, I was planning to do a pretty utilitarian rifle this time around so I'm going to finish it with Moly-Resin.

I've got a VZ-24 action I can send you for the cost of shipping. I picked it up at a yard sale for $20 in pieces, and in sad shape. Only fired the thing once, pulled the bolt and used it literally as a brace for the handrail on the barn stairs. It makes a cozy addition to our bar. I'll throw up some pics in a moment.

in Arizona i would try a big 5 if they are up there too. they always have them on sale for as low as $65.00 i once saw. You just have to be carefull and pick the best one. when buying one of those its best to check as many of them as you can before actually purchasing one.

Interarms Mark X. Is this not still manufactured?

The Interarms Mark X actions are currently being imported by Remington and used in their Model 798 sporter. To the best of my knowledge, bare actions and barreled actions are no longer available.
