Hello to all the rest of my fellow gun owners here in the Peoples' Democratic Republic of NJ. I wonder if anyone can help me out with locating some places to shoot locally?

I live between Englishtown & Freehold, and know of all of 3 public ranges in NJ, and all of them take at least an hour for me to get to under the best of circumstances, and sometimes a lot more than that depending on the traffic on a given day. Does anyone know of any indoor or outdoor open-to-the-public range, or of a state or national forest area where it is okay to shoot, in the central NJ area, or points south & west?

Have you checked out the Old Bridge Rifle & Pistol Club? Since you're in Englishtown, it shouldn't be too far. They have outdoor pistol, rifle, and skeet ranges as well as indoor pistol and airgun ranges. And it's the only place I know of in central NJ that offers regular IPSC matches. Very nice facility overall.

Lou,
Care to fill me in on the public ranges in NJ? I've been looking for one that wasn't a private club I'd have to join.

There used to be one down by Englishtown, but I don't know if it's still there.

I have to travel to NJ about once a month. All I can sat is that Hitler, Stalin and Mao would be really proud of your rulers...er...politicians. What a totalitarian police state! If I lived there I would be figuring out the best place to tunnel under the wall. I have to travel to Kalifornistan about as often. I must have done something really bad in a previous life! And now I have commies from Kalifornistan moving into the neighborhood and trying to lobby for comrade Marx:cuss:

I would say make the 25 mile trip down to Ft. Dix. What exactly are you looking for... handgun, shotgun, rifle ???? It is open to the public. Great place to shoot.

Check out Ft. Dix online at http://www.dixmwr.com/Community Recreation/Rod & Gun Club/RodGun_Home.htm

Also, mtclimbr... didnt your momma ever tell you the old axiom about if you dont have anything nice to say......

Having recently moved here from Georgia, I am finding southern NJ to very pleasant and suprisingly rural and inviting. Have made many nice friends in the gun hobby as well as learned some new pastimes like fly fishing for speckled trout in the ocean surf and sailing. I have been to Colorado also....

Agreed, Ft. Dix is a great place to shoot. I used to shoot black powder competition at Range #19 with the N-S SA. The base CO used to come out and watch. He was impressed when he saw how accurate a muzzle loader could be. Of course he was a little PO'd when he found that the best shooters were usually former Marines.

Be nice and they may let you fire a couple of rounds from a Ma Deuce at an old M113. That takes place way down Range Road by the tank firing area.

For where you live, old bridge rifle and pistol is the closest. The only public ranges I know of are shore shot and Ray's. In theory you can get on Fort Dix's range, but I don't know the magic formula to make that work.

If you don't want to join, old bridge competitions are open to the public, you just have to pay the non-member fee.

AXEMAN...

Thanks for the information about Fort Dix, i hadn't realized that they had a range that civilians could use. I called the RO this morning and had a very good 10 min. chat with him about the facilities, rules, etc, etc.

For anyone else who may also be interested:

Ft. Dix apparently makes joining & using the facilities about as painless as possible. Presuming that you are "legal" as far as NJFID is concerned, then you are good-to-go. All one has to do is go on over there, show your ID, pay your money and sign up. $50.00/year for civilian membership, less for active duty or retired military. Sounds reasonable & fair to me. They have targets available for sale, but no ammo., so bring your own.

BTW: They are not open every day, so check the homepage for hours, also directions, phone # and a map are on the hp...the link Axman provided in post #9 got me there no problem.

Thanks for the info, going to check Fort Dix out next week!

I guess we might as well include "nearby" PA ranges (this one's about 1h30min from me, Fort Dix is about 1h15min):

http://www.sunsethillrange.com/
http://www.sunsetrange.com/

Open to the public - $10 all day, open rain or shine most days except New Years/Christmas & Wednesdays. 30 yard rifle/pistol/trap, gun rental, instructors, ammo & targets.

I'm thinking of checking out Paradise Shooting Center nearby, anyone have any impressions of that place?
