Best powder for 95 grain SST in 243 besides IMR 4064????

I tried using IMR 4064 all the way up and down the powder recommendations using a hornady 95 grain SST bullet. I could not not get it to group at all. The best was in the 2 to 3 inch group at 100 yards.

I can grab this rifle a weatherby 243 and a cheap box of hornday whitetail 100 grain soft point and shot sub moa all day with it. So I know its not the scope or the rifle. I am using good new brass and I have prepped it very well also federal match primers.

I have about 300 rounds of the SST bullets that I would like to shoot at a low or medium velocity to let my 9 year old son deer hunt with.

I am seeking any power recommendations you might have for a 95 grain SST bullet in 243. My go to powder is usually IMR 4064 as this is the first time I could not get it to work. I dont like stocking alot of powders but I have several pounds of H1000, W748, IMR 4198, CFE BLackout all of which im sure are not right for a 243.

I have a small amount of H4895 that I could try. Any input please????

Your H1000 should be ok. H4350 is generally my go to, as well as W760.

IMR 4350 is what I use for .243 95 grain handloads.

I would try a different bullet with your 4064 first. It should be in the wheelhouse for slightly reduced loads in that round. Your rifle may just not like that slug. I've run it up and down the range from start to max in many mid-sized rounds and gotten good accuracy...if the rifle liked the bullet...across the board. I'd think the Speer 90 or 95 sp would be a good bet.

If you can't group that bullet with h1000, pitch the lot, problem is, that's a max load 3000fps+ proposition. Keeping in mind you're aiming for softer recoil I'd try imr4166, and if no joy, h4895 youth loads.

I'm running compressed loads of H1000 in 240 Wby with that bullet. You might get good accuracy, but it's definitely on the very slow side for you.
Since you are trying for a slightly reduced load, why not try the 4895?
I would also try decoppering the barrel. Sometimes different jacket material does play well with others.
I'm betting your gun dislikes that bullet.

Another vote for IMR4350. 41.5gr. Gets 2,900-3,000fps depending on barrel length. Consistent performer in multiple rifles. Recoil is modest.

I've tried several different powders and bullets. 760, RL17, 7828 and settled on a 95gr Ballistic Silvertip or a 90gr Accubond over IMR-4350. Shoots sub-MOA out of my 700 Remmy. Probably have taken over a dozen whitetails with it. Killed everything from armadillos and coyotes to deer.

My go to is imr 4350, but have also gotten good results from I any h 4895 and win 760. Had to use mag primers with 760.

Ive gotten good accuracy with all of these powders using either 95gr Nosler ballistic tips or 95 grain Hornady SSTs. However the IMR 7977 and the H4350 are both temp stable and I develop loads for deer hunting so that's typically the only 2 powders I load in 243 now. I have recently gotten very good accuracy with the IMR 7977 and the 95 grain SST.
However I've not done reduced recoil loads with any of these. IMR 4895 is the only one I've tried reduced loads with and it's not one of my typical powders for 243.

Just being honest - I do not think that you will find the goldilocks perfect bed of sub-moa accuracy at a reduced loading in 243 win. I may be wrong, but 243 is basically a mini magnum when considering bore diameter and case capacity. To me, it appears that you have 5 options:

Option 1: Roll with what you have in IMR 4064. A 9 year old typically can't tell the difference between a 3moa load and a sub moa load. We don't know your hunting conditions or your 9 year old. Youth hunts are more likely shorter distance shots. 30 yards? 50 yards? Can the 9 yr old even hold 8moa at 100? We have no idea. These are things that cannot be communicated with a small blurb. The question is, does the potential increased accuracy matter?

Option 2: Use your H1000. I'm honestly not sure how to get the starting load in the case because I start feeling crunching at about 43gr. If it works accuracy wise, great. However, it will absolutely come with the price of kicking harder. That is not ideal for a 9 year old.

Option 3: Pony up for an "ideal for 243" pound of powder to try with the SST's - be that IMR 4350, IMR 7828, Hybrid 100v, etc. The 95-100gr 243 win bullets typically perform best with a slow burning "magnum" powder just due to the bore diameter and the case capacity. You get about 160 charges out of one pound. This will most likely get you the accuracy, but does not guarantee that your 9 yr old can shoot it.

Option 4: Truly, if the 9 year old has a slim build or is recoil sensitive, I would just buy a couple boxes of reduced recoil ammo, like this https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1001697452 and be done with it.

Option 5: Try bullets that have a better chance of attaining the accuracy goal with IMR 4064. I would suggest lighter bullets in the 87gr range.

There may be other options, but these are the easiest ones, without buying a 6.5 Grendel - haha.

For my young son and that bullet, I found an accuracy node right at 34 grains of Varget. A bit less velocity, but I don’t notice it game. The load has stuck long after he has matured. It’s been that good.

I would use that or try maybe try Varget. Any faster powder will have less felt recoil.
