IMR 4064 and 168 Grain Amax

TAC should do okay accuracy wise, AR Comp has been the King of accuracy and velocity for me in my LR308 with all 150-175gr bullets I've shot it with. N140 and H4895 have been right there with 168's as well.

I’ll try some of the lower loads of TAC or just go with the CFE 223 load I tried a few months ago. The 175 grain SMK load with IMR 4064 consistently shoots about 0.75”-0.8” from 100 yards (3-4 shots). The CFE 223 load with 168 grain Amax was just over 1”, so there’s certainly nothing wrong with it. I was just trying to get down to the SMK load for a little less cost per projectile.

Indeed. After initial testing of the Amax I had a load that shot as well as the SMK load, but I have not since been able to repeat it. That said the Amax appears to shoot between 0.8 and 1.2 inches no matter how much CFE 223 powder is pushing it.

Well to quote Kat Williams it’s time to make a pimp decision. I believe I will stick with my original, unpublished plan if the IMR 4064 didn’t outshoot my CFE 223 loads. I’ll use the CFE 223 and save the IMR 4064 for loads I know work, which means I need to find some more 175 grain SMKs.

My remaining supplies of TAC will go to a new load in 223, which was also part of my plan. I found an extra box of 55 grain soft points that need a good load.

About a month ago powder valley had them non sale. I posted the link. I had bps price match a 100 count and the manager wasn't happy.

Looking at the service rifle data on Hodgdens site it seems BL-(C)2 is the powder to use for lower pressure loads in 308. I’m on the look out.

100 would last me a while. A LGS here has a box for a good price. I might snag them. I wonder if the regular Hornady 168 grain BTHP would shoot any better.

Normal bps price was 50 bucks, I won't buy them tor that. The sale was 39.15 which still hurt but I did it.

Like H335, BL-C(2) is a ball powder. Also like H335, BL-C(2) 'requires' a Magnum primer, and... although I don't have first-hand experience with it... it, too, is 'quite blasty.' It's probably a great powder for 150grn M80 duplicate loads, but I don't know anyone that uses it as a match powder. But... you never know. I'd probably try to find more TAC over BL-C(2).

If I could replicate the Winchester M80 ball rounds I’d be set. For some reason those things shoot great from this rifle. This was 50 yards, but I’d be content if that stuff shot twice that size. B7388C0F-2214-4622-B224-D2824DE683C7.jpeg

A 168 gr Amax
308 cal with shoot most any powder well, RL-15, Varget, BL-C2 , imr 4064 , VV n-140, H 4895, imr 4895, 4166, it just takes tuning a bit of load tuning.

By all reasonable measures these shoot fine. I’m just trying to wring too much out of them or at least all I can. I’ll probably stick to my original plan above. If I run across a supply of a different powder I may try it but I won’t go looking.

That being the case, then you have a plethora (I love being able to use that word...) of powder choices. Everything from IMR3031, up through to IMR4064, et al. Even though ball powders meter better, I'd rather use extruded powders... the exception to that being TAC.
