Best pump shotgun out there.

Best pump shotgun? I'm still looking for it.

But till I find it, a good 870 will do just fine.

I prefer the BPS because for subgauges because hulls are ejected at your feet. Afterwards you can just pick-up the pile and reload them.

Also, a lefty may favor a BPS because of bottom ejection.

As for the other brands, as long as your gun works, then it's good.

If you're going to buy new...especially Remington...then I'd just ask the seller what will be the course of action if your new pump doesn't perform as advertised. Chances are it will, still, it would be nice to have some plan if your gun won't shuck certain hulls.

Benelli Nova

I own a few of these. Easiest pump I have ever had to take apart and clean. The forearm is a little thick though very functional. I must say if I can find an 870 Express Tactical whose sights actually line up, I will be buying one. I love the way it feels in my hands.

I'm a big fan of the Ithaca. It's smoother and a little lighter than the Rem 870, and the controls seem to be better thought out than on a lot of other shotguns. I also like that it loads with the carrier up.

I do believe a BPS is about as well designed as anything on the planet, but I cannot abide the loading thru the magazine part. I don't care where it ejects and i don't care where the safety is. The feel is different, but not objectionable.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean about loading through the magazine part. Could you be a little more specific?

The Ithica is a good enough gun, as is the Browning. They just haven't had enough hard use to convince me they are on the same level as the 870. Maybe so, but I'm not convinved yet.

Really? I know they didn't see a lot of use during WWII, so I'll give you that one, but what about their use during Vietnam? Or how about with the LAPD?

I think he's referring to the inability to load a single shell through the ejection port.

There is no such thing as the best one.

That being said I don't think you can find one that does anything more than the Remington 870 does.

The best?

The one you've shot so much without a problem that it feels like a body part, not a tool....

It's not the shotgun i shoot most, but there's no doubt that the best "pump" shotguns ever made in quanity, have "Wingmaster" on them... They just keep going and going!

I’m not sure if I finally started to figure out how to shoot a shotgun at the same time I picked up my Benelli SuperNova, or if it’s that much better than the others I’d had to that point but man do I like that shotgun.

I had an 870. It never let me down but it sure did beat me up. I haven’t shot one in years so I don’t know how much of that was poor fit vs. poor technique.

I'm not sure why people keep promoting the 870. Everyone I know that has owned one has had to beat it against the ground to dislodge a fired shell at some point. No thanks.

870 Wingmaster

I use a 870 Wingmaster in 20 ga for skeet. I have put thousands of shells thru it....much more than the average hunter would do in a lifetime.
Still works perfectly.

Older 870 wingmanster is my favorite and always will be. I have owned several others by cheap and expensive and nothing has taken its place.

I picked up a Browning BPS youth 20ga for my boys to turkey hunt with. They both own 870 wingmaster 28ga but are not legal fodder for turkey. I took this new BPS to run some shells through it last weekend. With dove season around the corner I wanted to break the gun in and find out quirks. I shot two rounds of sporting clays. After catching more than a little greif about a showing up with a youth gun. I proceeded to shoot 37 for 50 the first round and 42 for 50 the second round. Nice little shotgun. It runs smooth but loads a little awkward. After firing thousands of rounds through a 870. I kept wanting to flip the first shell in the side of the receiver and thumb the other shell through the bottom. I can do blindfolded with a 870. The BPS made me stop and think several times. I short stroked the pump twice costing me the 2nd shot at a bird. Not the fault of the gun but the shooter. Old 870's that are well warn cycle like oil being poured from a bucket. Smooth as silk.

My vote is the same but the BPS is a nice little # than can certainly be in the top rankings.

Browning BPS for me.

When it comes to pumps, you can't go wrong with a Browning BPS, Ithaca 37, or Remington 870 Wingmaster.

Of the three I mentioned, one isn't better than the other. Every shotgun will feel different. Get the one that fits you the best.

If best is defined as coolest, then the Ithaca 37 has to be a contender. If best is defined as mechanically the most refined, then the Model 12 rises to the top. If best equals most durable and customizable, then the 870 wins. If best equals prettiest, then the BPS probably takes the crown.

If best equates to the one that I would rather walk afield with above all others, then the Nova/Super Nova wins.

my favorite is my savage/browning pat. 620 has a 20 inch barrell, built like a tank, locks up like a bank vault and feeds and ejects everything.

Well said :)

I still have to throw in my Winchester 1300 as being an honorable mention. They are economical to own and very reliable.

I'll give a vote for Mossberg;) I'd say for tactical use either Mossberg or Ithaca. For hunting and sporting you really can't beat the BPS. I've never seen a BPS with poor fit and finish. I guess I'm not really a fan of Remington (haven't had good luck with them) though the older ones are rock solid.

I am NOT a shotgun guy by any stretch, but, everytime I hear any comparison between pump shotguns, the guns are ALWAYS being compared to the 870...........

Why no Mossberg 500 love?

Sure -- I'll give a nod to the 500 also. :)

I don't have any idea which is the best pump shotgun in the world, but I happen to like my Mossberg... :D

.

It's a pump if it fits you well and has a good barrel on it with the right choke for what you are doing then any of them that meet those 3 things will be just fine.

I like model 97s but own a win 1300 that has done nothing but impress me.

F&S new issue praises a mossberg 835 as the only pump on their list.

If you like the 870 then go for it, dont forget to look over the Italian pumps on the market though.

Out of the shotguns I've shot regularly:
1. 870 Express Tactical (my HD gun, thousands of rds, never FTF or FTeject)
2. Mossy 591 (Military setup, very sexy! 'Rough' action wore in after ~250rds)
3. Taurus Judge :neener: (EDIT:forgot this was 'pump' forum but its still #3)
4. Mossy 500 (Only shotgun I've seen break:eek:)

My 870 is the first gun I ever disassembled/reassembled blind. I like that you can go crazy with acc's, I've added two items to mine and it seems perfect. I will add that mine is not the typical wood/blued setup. It may have even been limited run, my serial # is AB0000xxx.

I've shot a Binelli, but I was still 'rookie' so my opinion was skewed. It seemed heavy to me.

I'm not sure why people keep promoting the 870. Everyone I know that has owned one has had to beat it against the ground to dislodge a fired shell at some point. No thanks.
^^ You dont KNOW me, but I've never had a problem with my 870 Express Tactical
