Best Reloading book?

Ok so i looked and looked and looked and I did not see anyother threads about books in the Handloading / Reloading fourm. Well, someone in my family is selling a whole set up for reloading ( Press, powder unit, Vibratory Case Cleaner, all dillon made, and lots of extras as far as dies and brass ). I've been doing lots of reading up on reloading but all of the books that i got from this family member are way out dated ( most recent book was printed in 1980 ). I plan on picking up the whole set up but before i do i want to get a few more weeks of reading in, so off to Barns and Noble I will go tonight after i get out of work.



So whats the number 1 / best book to pick up? I.E one book that has EVERYTHING in it and its up to date. So far every book ( the ones i got from a family member ) that i've looked through hasent had 40 S&W or any of the newer loads.

Get several, Lyman, Speer, get data from the powder and bullet mfg websites too.

Ok so i should look for the Lyman and Speer books at the book store. And then get powder and bullet info from the mfgs websites.


Is there any other books that i should have on hand and read before i start reloading in a few weeks?

I think the Sierra 5th edition is a good book to have. It covers lots of different cartiages and has additional sections on ballistics and even cleaning methods that are useful to read.

"ABC's of Reloading" and the Hornaday manual set are great. Lyman made me mad when I first started because it had no load listed for W231 and 230gr bullets, so I got Speer and Hornaday to cover my butt. Lots of resouces online also.

B&N stores carry reloading manuals?

My favorite is Speer No. 13.

I like the write-ups on each cartridge. Entertaining and well-written. I like the fact that the powders are sorted by velocity.

Downside is it only covers Speer bullets. But it covers all powders...

You can't have too much info, but for the best all arounder I would vote for Lyman. They update it often and seem to have a good selection of powders. They also list lead bullet loads which may not matter to you.

FWIW, all manuals published within the last few years have 40 Cal data. The caliber is only about 10 or 15 years old so no data existed 20 years ago.

And our B&N doesn't have reloading manuals.

Wow, if you can buy these manuals at B&N in MI, I'm moving!!! Here is merry old New England, we're lucky to find a decent selection even in the gun stores.

My nomination would be Sierra, actually, but the three I like best are Hornady, Sierra and Speer.

Get the Lee book

As a beginner, I'm happy the way it goes into the basics. Plus, it's an entertaining read.

Try and get a copy of the Hodgdon DataManuel #27. It lists loads in each caliber from several powder manufacturers. The Lyman #48 would be next on my list.

Well I went to B&N last night. Lots and lots of good books but



1. Not a single Shotgun News, they said they only order 8 every mounth.


2. I only found one book on reloading, The ABCs of reloading. It did not say on it anywhere that it had anything to do with Speer or Lyman or Sierra. Also it was printed in something like 1996 or 1997 so i ended up not getting it.


I think i'll just order everything off the net.

ABC's is just a how to reload book, not a data manual. It's pretty good, but most of the data books have a good section on how to reload.

I have and recommend the Speer manuals, the Lyman Manuals, the Sierra manual, and the Lee.
