I've got insomnia again (and I'm in Alaska in the WINTER--figure that out), so I thought I'd post a silly poll. This is for the best overall rifle, in your totally biased opinions.

Some great choices on the poll and some missing. Can't have it all. I voted for the Garand. Would most likely be the one they'd take "from my cold, dead hands." May not be the greatest of all time but I don't own one any better and doubt I ever will.

I know how you feel about the insomnia in the middle of winter. :D Right now I'm choosing the AR-15 for no other real reason other than thats the next rifle I want to buy.

Picked the M-14 because of .308 caliber and 20 round detatchable magazine. If the M-1 came with a 20 round detatachable magazine in 30.06, then I would have voted for it.

I dunno that my Ol' Pet is the "best" gun, but it has worked for me for over 30 years: Wby Mk V in '06. Accurate, reliable and potent, but what's important is that I can hit with it.

Howsomever, I figure that with a little time and effort, I could make almost any bolt action in similar cartridge to be just as good.

:), Art

I'm with MJRW here. Best rifle for use as a flagpole? Best rifle for churning butter? Best rifle to beat Chuck Schumer with?

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. This poll is for best rifle we're going to buy Cosmoline.

So far, so good!

I tossed out my own preferences after coming up with the FAL, so then I used 762x51's criteria, and STILL came up with a FAL Second place is the Garand, so that's how I voted.

I really like both the M1 Garand and M-14. A very difficult choice. I voted for the M-14 because I believe it was an improved evolution of the Garand. However, for economical reasons, if I had to dole out the green for one, I'd probably spend it on a Garand even though I believe the M-14 is slightly better.

Yah! depends.

I'm partial to Rem's 700 actions just because I grew up with 'em - & .243s to be exact.

Right now, my fave is a Rem 7 in .308 compact, 2X8 scope. Takes everything we have to offer - lightweight, quick & accurate enough.

"This poll is for best rifle we're going to buy Cosmoline."

Well then. No sense in a poll. Why not just tell us what you want & we'll come up with some way to fund this thing, no? ;)

Well, if I could have any one single rifle it would be a beautifully blued 24" barreled pre-'64 model 70 in 257 Roberts Ackley Improved with a lightly figured stock and my favorite 6x Swarovski scope. I also really like how the modern Ruger 77s handle. Many need a bit of trigger work but other than that, I've been pretty happy with them.

I know the poll was pretty informal but it is pretty open. Maybe another idea for a poll would be 'favorite type of rifle' where the options were, carry weight bolt rifle, heavy tactical/sniper/varmint rifle, lever action rifle, sporting semi auto rifle, military type semi auto, military surplus rifle etc...

The best rifle? If it isn't my Lawrence "Tommy" Moore hand built .30-06 target rifle then it must be just about any Remington Model 721, preferably in .270.

Can you spell "Tack-drivers"?

But they aren't on your list so I can't vote.

I'm surprised the AK is favored over the AR.

I have an M1, Pre-64 Win 70 in 300 H&H w/ 26" barrel and want an M1A NM. I have been issued an M16 many years ago. From these of which I have experience I selected the Pre-64 Win 70. The M1 is a close second.

I was so ready to put a little black dot next to a HK G3 or G36,but your poll doesn't include either one,so I don't get to vote..:(

*sniff* I'll over look this glaring omission this one time.:D

Impossible criteria, mixing civilian hunting rifles with military rifles.

The jobs and functions are so disparate that it's impossible to choose a "best" rifle from the bunch.

That said, I'll still try, and go with one that's not on the list, the Remington 700.

What Mike says. Apples to oranges to broccoli & butternut squash. Where the Remington bolt gun?

Mike's a plus to the board in his: (& same with my own)

The jobs and functions are so disparate that it's impossible to choose a "best" rifle from the bunch.

You really do have to ask the correct question.

Yer best rifle so depends on what you want it to do.

That's the queston, no?

Anything else is just posturing.

Since the M-14 is a recognized "improvement" over the Garand, I am at a loss to understand why someone would choose the M1 over the M14 or M1A. Must be an emotion based vote.
