Who is the best company to convert a Saiga sporter to a "real AK"?

All I want done is a basic conversion w/ black synthetic furniture (pistol grip, normal non-folding stock), rifle able to use high-cap mags, and rifle refinished in a very durable coating. I don't need ultra-tacticool rails, folding stocks, etc. etc.

Post conversion reliability, fit & finish, and cost are my main concerns.

Also, if you've used any of the companies I have in the poll, how much did it cost?

The only 3 professional places I know of that do the conversions are listed in my poll. Please post others if you know of any.

Thanks High Roaders!

Got my 103 back from Chris Butler at AKUSA and am very happy with it. Only had one problem and it was with the rear sight which was alleviated when I put in a Mojo peep. He does a great job on the trigger (very light) and I really like the front sight block w/ 74-style break. He can pretty much build anything you want, so you can't go wrong.

Why not just buy an AK?

Saigas are purportedly very high quality AKs for the money.

Yes, that has been my experience. When I say the AK is underrated and can keep 3MOA or better at 300 yards, rapid fire, even when hot, I am specifically talking about a Saiga. I wouldn't call it a Sub-MOA rifle at all, but I have seen sub-MOA 5 round groups. Any decent AR can do that, but the Saiga is in a stamped AK receiver, so it's got that legendary AK reliability. The only thing bad about the Saiga is that it is post-ban sporterized, with no pistol grip and the trigger moved back, so an AK-style conversion for it can be an ergonomic improvement. If you like standard non pistol grip stocks, there isn't much reason to change it.

Oh and some of them might have magazine issues, but the one I have fired shoots fine with steel AK 30 rounders.

Tromix Quailty conversion,I supplied the rifle .
10 parts legal, Ak mags, folding stock.$360 sent back to me.
Tromix will supply a rifle if you need.Should be less without folding stock.

Plus, Tromixes are made by FBMG, run by our very own Corriea and Pvt Pyle.

A Tromix 12 gauge is pretty high on my (non C&R) wish list.

Just to clarify, we don't make the Tromix guns. They are built by Tony Rumore of Oklahoma. We are however his only real dealer that actually stocks them. Tony does custom builds out of his own place.

He's also an evil genius who can do ANYTHING with an AK.

His(AKUSA) custom AKs run around $1300. I sent him a Saiga($250) and he charged $820 for the AK103 conversion, so a little over 1k. Its one of the best AK103 clones IMO. I'll try get a pic up soon.

I dont think krebs knows much about 'real AKs' from the errors on the website. The quality of work is great I'm sure, but you'd have to tell them exactly what you want if you want an accurate clone.

I have a tromix converted saiga-12 and its very nice.

AKUSA does amazing work from what I hear, but you pay for it.

I'm planning to pick up one of those Tromix conversions soon from our buds over at FBMG. :)

By the way, these are all marked as Made in Russia right? From Izmash?

what parts do I have to replace if I want to keep the trigger group in the same position, install a feed ramp, and be able to accept standard AK magazines?

Dolanp:

Yes the FBMG guns are all new izmash siagas prior to the tromix conversion. Have you seen the guns at the store or at a crossroads gunshow in the FBMG booth?

I did my 308 myself, in a PSL/Dragunov clone.

I am working on a 16" 308 with relocated G3 sights and other tweaks.

Do it yourself, the only hard part is the front forearm retainer. But if you want black synthetic, then you can just leave the stock one on there.

Here is my 22", and a photoshop of the 16" project.

Tex, that's a damn fine looking magazine in that photoshopped picture. I can only imagine what kind of visionary could design and fabricate such a glorious magazine. :)

I can only imagine myself, at least until they arrive and I can get them in my hot little hands!!

Well tex, I can tell you this:

After a few of you sit and put them together for 2-3 hours straight, that's a HUGE pile of magazines you're looking at!

Correia wouldn't let me put "inspected by #12" stickers on them though. :D

But they are good looking, eh?

Yep, good looking enough to convince me to get the 16" and cut it up...

I like the stocker in the Saiganov; snipers don't need more than 10 rds. anyhow.... :neener:

So Ben, how are your thumbs? :D We must have did 600 magazines last night.
