I'm going to buy my first .22 auto loader (I have a lever action right now) and I plan on glassing it right out of the gate. I'm not too familiar with scopes or how rifle scopes in particular work. I have a Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 MD scope for a pellet rifle at the moment. Its a pretty nice scope for throwing .20in sized lead pellets 30-40 yards.

What is a good scope to pair with the 552? What magnification and lense size is suitable for this rifle? I'm willing to spend a few extra bucks for quality. I'd like to get something that is rugged and doesn't weight the rifle down too much.

Thanks in advance!

Another thought that crossed my mind: does anyone like fixed magnification scopes for their simplicity with a .22 rifle?

I have had this rifle for a long time, so let me save you some trouble, keep it small. If you don't you will really screw up the balance here, especially if shooting off a bench- it will run around and roll over all over the place, with any scope too long or heavy.
Get nothing over 32mm for the obj. piece. And what looks best is a old school , made in el paso Weaver fixed 4 x, steel tube. If you can find one of these on ebay or gunbroker or another site, then get that, or whatever is your favorite, small fixed 4 or 6 power, with an obj no bigger than 32mm.

2 problems, the whole top line of this rifle does sit very low; so your scope tends to ride a bit high, especially if you use a bigger scope- so now it becomes top heavy. then the front stock of these things is basically shaped like a cooks rolling/bakin pin; totally round, and it's balance is lower than the rest of the rifle.
So sitting it in a bag or rest, off of a bench, when it is scoped, it tends to roll around all over the place.

Yes. I could go with tactical knobs everywhere if it's an accurate boltie, but for a semiauto, lever or pump, simple is part of the appeal of the thing.

I'd go with the lightest scope that works. A 4X Leupold rimfire scope would be the first thing I looked at.

Another thing... I put peep sights on a .22 lever gun, and I love them. I wouldn't want a scope on that gun, and I can shoot about as well with the peeps.
