What is the best way? Years back I bought a scope and mount for it that was terrible. (I was very young) I replaced the rear sight with the mount and had an Extended Eye Relief scope. At the time, I didn't know the differences between these scopes and bought a pistol scope. In addition to the scope NOT serving the purpose I had expected it to, the mount moved with every shot. WORTHLESS. I have bought new rifles and such since then but am thinking about working something cheaper but effective on the Mosin.

What would you all recommend for putting a scope on the old M44? Is it worth it to just drill and tap/purchase a new bolt? Should I go with a scout set-up? Side mount? It looks like the Mosin is good to 500 yards with a little work... I'm probably not going to stretch it that far... maybe 200-300.

Thanks!

I had the same experience with those cheap mounts. I cant say whats the best way to go about scoping one of these rifles, but I can tell you what worked for me.

I'm partial to the scout-style setup so, after the experiment with the cheap mount I found a guy on gunbroker selling custom made solid machined aluminum mounts that are pinned in the rear sight base. I bought one and it has been rock solid.

The down side is you will have to drill holes through your rear sight base for the pins that secure it. The benefit is it wont loosen up and shift around like the crappy mounts with set screws. The mount was less than 30$.

I also hear good things about the S&K mounts. They don't require permanent alterations but cost about as much as the rifle. :D
