I was at my local gun store buying a XD .45 when I asked him what is the best selling pistol..... he said that he sells more XD than any other pistol but I'll take that with a grain of salt.

So, I'll ask you guys, what do you think is the best selling pistol today is?

Glock
S&W
XD
1911's
hi-points :uhoh:

Kel-Tek maybe, just based on price, at least to private citizens. I've seen links to sale figures here before, I don't know where to find them now though.

Look at the ruger LCP coming out next month for a pocket pistol 330 MSRP
You should be able to get it around 275

At my local range it's Hi-points and S&W revolvers for the ladies. By a large margin apparently, says my buddy who works there. :)

Of all time clearly the 1911. But year to year it will vary with whatever the current industry trend is or what the police are using at that time.

Best selling within what time frame. The last 100, 50, 20, 5, 1 years? I believe the gun shop owner when he said the XD. They are hot is some shops recently. But, if you figure the best selling over the last X number of years, it won't be the XD.

Gotta be the Glock, they have reported over 5 million pistols made & sold since the 1980's.

Colt Govt. and all it's clones took 100 years to reach 5 million.

My local dealer said the same thing (xd's sell much higher numbers right now), but after talking about it we determined it is largely due to a couple of things - The 1911 and Glock markets have been saturated for some time, and the XD is the "latest thing" that is getting decent reviews. Some of the other new toys are getting mixed reviews (M&P, Taurus 1911, you get the picture) so people are holding back or just buying an XD.
Local dealer told me that the difference is in the neighborhood of 30:5 XD to glock and about 30:20 XD to 1911 style in the last few months. Those are his numbers not mine. I found it interesting though.

I would actually like to read the facts on the 1911's production numbers since its start... I know colt had produced over 600,000 by 1981 or so... don't know the numbers since then though. Plus, most of the new clone companies don't have extensive records like Colt, Remington Rand and Ithaca since they weren't under government contract.

Taurus

If I were to guess, I would say Taurus. I doubt any GSD will admit it though. He wants to sell the higher priced(hence higher profit) guns. We all know most GSD's lie their a** off, so I wouldn't trust what they say in this dept. And no, I don't own a Taurus.:neener:

I would have to say 1911... strickly on the numbers sold to the US goverment,( then add in the civilian market) I know after WW2 they really did not buy any more, but durring WW2 they bought about 2 mill.

I had two gun shops tell me that the S&W 642 was by far their biggest seller.
Probably because more and more people are getting their concealed weapons permit. Every gun show I go to there are 75 people in line waiting to get fingerprinted.
At $60 a pop , those people are making a killing giving their little 2 hour, barely meets minimum requirements, class.
As far as a brand, I'm with everybody else, I would guess Glock because they are reasonably priced, reliable and they come in every caliber and configuration imaginable.

The new Ruger 380 LCP may fit that category.

I've read somewhere that Ruger had 87,000 orders (5) days after the Shot ShOw.

Why would I look at an unproven copy of a pistol that is available now in a proven form, namely the P-3AT?

Here is a link to the 2006 sales figures.

KelTec produces 1000 P-3ATs a week. If there are any pistols produced in larger quantities, I'd be surprised.

I think lately the XD is the hot seller, especially the Compact models. I couldn't find one anywhere but a place in Vegas got ordered one in the next day. All the local gun stores said XD's are selling as fast as they can get them.
