Possible Downtime Alert
I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.
When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

I say the Ruger P345, DA/SA external hammer. 8+1 single stack magazines in .45 caliber. This version is the precursor to the SR9 series and is fairly thin for its caliber. I own this weapon and it has not failed to fire yet after roughly 700rds and it only ran me $450 nib.

Not a hi-cap; but I really like the Walther P-5 9mm. A shorter version of the P-38...

The Smith & Wesson M&P is the state-of-the-art service pistol. The M&P platform was introduced in 2006 after years of development, and countless interviews with the folks who would come to depend on it... The military, police and professional shooters.

(Sorry but SA only guns are not considered service pistols anymore so the 1911 and BHP don't count. I know they are fine guns but the police and military are not going to use them anymore so they are not service pistols anymore. Get used to it and stop crying about.)
The Marines just ordered 4,000 more 1911s for the Marine Expeditionary Unit to replace the M9... I know is not the best in the world, but if the marines are going back to it, and you know the good old USMC with their emphasis on desk jobs. It makes you wonder... Naw the USMC is sub par, just watch what the USAF is giving to their front line grunts!
P.S. I under stand what the poster of this thread is asking, and that the 1911 is not the 1# pistol out their, but that last part just bothered me.

Me too. And with some front line armies still carrying the Browning Hi Power, you have to wonder if the age of the single action only semi-auto is truly over as a service pistol. The picture of Prince Harry in Afganistan with the Hi Power riding in his vest comes to mind.

My vote for the best service pistol is gonna be the Glock. This design has been overwhelmingly popular with LEO agencies since its inception because it is tough, simple, safe, and reliable. The polymer frame makes it lightweight, adds flex that absorbs recoil energy, allows for outstanding capacity, and provides a rail for a white light or laser. Plus it reduces production cost. This design has also seen use with some militaries and has proven to be durable and reliable in all weather conditions with minimal maintenance. The design is very modular and versatile, and so simple that with very little training, even end users could fix or replace nearly anything that can break on that pistol with minimal tools.
Now then, I do have a bone to pick with this:
SAO guns are still considered service pistols by a good deal of professional users. 1911s carried cocked and locked are still very popular with the Montana State Highway Patrol and the Sheriff's Dept. They are still used by more elite groups in law enforcement, such as the Texas Rangers, LAPD SWAT, and FBI HRT. And the 1911 still sees combat issued to Delta and various MEU(SOC) and Recon units. Single action autos are still viable designs. In fact, they are still a very popular choice among the more elite organizations. "So get used to it and quit crying about [sic]."

The glock has no fixed safety - what was that quote again "cocked & locked - safer than a glock"
M1911s are STILL being used and they are not being released as surtplus in any real quantities - especially when one considers that approx 2 milion were made over the years.
So the M1911 IS still a service pistol and one of the best, in my opinion.

And technically, Springfield doesn't make it. They just import it and throw their name on it
That said, Glock 19/17 or a SIG Pro would be my choice for best bang for the buck service handgun
I've tried most of them, and my favorite is the Smith & Wesson M&P, which seems to combine the best practical features of the Glock with improved ergonomics. Its street price is pretty reasonable, too, especially with the $50 off or two free magazines deal that comes around a couple of times a year.

Anyway I'll express my admiration of the
first of the SUper 9s in '75 the CZ 75B which is
DA/SA but could also utilize the thumb safety
for Condition One carry or for a pause in shooting
I have a plain CZ 75B 9mm and it just runs great
very accurate and simple to field strip and clean
every 500-700 rds.
Nice companion for my SW1911
although last I checked the CZUSA site

I found the controls much easier to use, liked the trigger and sights more
than the Glock. as well as the 3 different backstraps for in this case
soldiers to fit the gun to thieir hands Polymer and DAO make
sense for the average soldier these days with less and less youth proficient
with handguns or thir manual of Arms
I thought the Grits were converting to a variant of the CZ75 DA/SA

Same thing for the Glock Program, prices may have been different 5 years ago.
Originally I would have been all for the CZ75, or the P01, but right now, the full size duty CZ pistol I would love would be the Czech military's new darling, the CZ Phantom.
Last - why is Harry wearing a 5.11 hat with US flag on it? Not that I mind, but that IS odd for the heir to the English throne. And SOMEBODY GET HIM A HOLSTER! That uncocked HiPower looks wrong like that!
