That's an OUTSTANDING shtf rifle.

If you want a bit more, sell some of the other guns and get an AR or AK and care for it well. But keep the .270.

The closest thing we've seen to a real SHTF scenario, the LA rioits, was curbed in large part by korean shop owners standing on the roofs of their stores with AK/ARs.

There absolutely are... MOST are under the age of 21, but some aren't...

I can envision a situation where extreme mass panic spurs looting or just all around chaos for a few hours, or even a couple days. In that situation, who knows what might be "enough".

I know that New Yorkers rose to the occasion on September 11th, but I honestly don't doubt that if, God forbid, we had other smaller, more widespread terrorist attacks, eventually some "bad eggs" would take advantage of the situation.

Definitely get more than one rifle. Simply put, even the best rifle can have an off day - best to have backup before you have to go out looking for one.

A decent budget .270/.308/.30-06 bolt would work, as would the SAR-1s, SKSs, and other rifles posted here.

.22 LR is not to be underestimated. But what level of S is HTF? If we're talking Mad Max/Dawn of the Dead-type apocalypse, get as many .22 LR rounds as you can carry so you can get food and you can fight off the majority of attackers (.22 LR is pretty damn accurate at 75 yards in the rifles I've shot it from - YMMV). But for the average amount of SHTF, a nice 12 gauge will work wonders. A military-style rifle is intimidating, but not as intimidating as shucking a 3" shell into the chamber of an 870...
 
Garands are great ... I have many, but in a SHTF scanario I'd be packing my SAR-1.

(Lighter, reliable, 40-round mags, fairly accurate at 100 yards or less, just to name a few reasons.)

I have some RealTree camo duct tape that not only will protect you from zombies, but allow you to melt into the background. Assuming the background is covered in RealTree camo duct tape...

I'm with Atlas Shrug. get the Rack Grade Dane M1 from CMP.

Not only will you get a cool historical gun that will do you well if TSHTF, but the Garand bug will bite and you will start acquiring more M1s and then your whole family will have one and you will have well equipped squad if TSHTF.
 
I would probably say an SKS.
It is true that they have their limits but I think that they are an excellent compromise.
I currently have an AK so that is what I use to shoot 7.62x39mm.
It is reliable and I am really familiar with it so I will keep it but if I were going to spend the same $500 today I would get an SKS, stripper clips, and ammo instead.
I have shot my brother's alot and I want to get a couple when finances allow.
 
Another vote for SKS. Cheap hardy rifles that love to eat cheap Russian ammo. (Just remember to clean it well after shooting ANY surplus ammo.) Just a warning though...
An SKS will make you want your C&R license....
Your C&R license will devour any spare cash you have around...
