uuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh if the shtf...and you have a highpower bolt....and shotgun......I would buy a ruger 10/22 and lots of 22s........reason being..22 is great for getting something to eat.....and if the need arises the bolt action will relive the idiot coming at you from his auto-whatever

Heck, for $350 you can buy a Yugo SKS, a 10/22 and plenty of ammo for each of them.

But, my vote would be for a SAR-1. You can pick up extra mags and ammo as the funds become available without the better half getting too upset.

Oh I forgot to mention I also own a ruger10/22

Heres what I got but still nothing I consider to be a great shtf rifle

Ruger 10/22-stainless/laminated multiple 10rd and 30 rnd mags
Rem 870 21 inch mossy oak furniture
Ruger 270 mk 2 black/synthetic with nikon monarck
nef 50 cal muzzleloader syn/stain
taurus 850 cia stubby 38spl stain
walther p22
cz75 9mm
nef 410
Gamo 177cal:D

mastinson,

You have a SHTF rifle. .270 will work just fine. You also have a close-range multiple-adversary arm, the 870.

"Buy ammo and training."

I think some people have been watching far too many George Romero movies...

SURELY you caught the sarcastic yet FRIENDLY shot at humor there, RIGHT? I mean, we ALL know that there won't be any roving zombies, RIGHT?

It's just a joke, based largely on the many threads I've read about "SHTF rifle out to 300 yards" and civvies like me asking things like "in a SHTF scenario, what round penetrates car doors best"... Just kidding... sense of humor and all that!

OH, and PS - it certainly wasn't a slam at the thread starter, OR anyone who's posted here... This thread may well be the most reasonable, realistic SHTF discussion I've ever read. I just wanted to "go there" before some 14 year old watching "28 Days Later" did.

For a reality based "SHTF" scenario, I vote 12 gauge pump.

What's not commanding about a .45-70? :uhoh:

:D :D

I can see it now. Hordes of alienZombies fleeing in fear from the boom and flash.

Seriously, the 12 gauge ought to be enough. If not, go with a Saiga in 7.62x39, extra mags and ammo. $239+

Yes, the 12 guage pump action shotgun IS the best defense weapon of all time...but I would go with an SKS or an AK/Saiga if you find them cheaper than the pump

Go cheap, get the best bang for your buck! If you buy right you could pick up a handgun, a rifle, mags and ammo for both if you know where to go:D

"SURELY you caught the sarcastic yet FRIENDLY shot at humor there, RIGHT? I mean, we ALL know that there won't be any roving zombies, RIGHT?"

Hence my sarcastic rejoinder, Onslaught...

I do think, however, that there are truly some people out there who do believe that they need an uberrifle for protection against skin eating zombies in the post nuclear/biological apocalyptic holacaust...

I'd vote for:

a good SKS...I prefer the chinese models myself..especially the paratrooper or a Saiga in 7.62X39 with 16 inch barrel. Leaves money left over for ammo, accessories, and maybe even a Makarov (just to be sure you know).

Saiga

Are the saiga's durable and reliable, I know they are only 10 rounders available for them but if the sunset ban ever goes away do the russians even make hi caps for them? FYI I know they can be converted to tak ak mags but i'm not intrested in doing any conversons because in my opinion it leaves alot more chances of failed reliability issues down the road.

Durn tootin. I bet you get an intergallatic phone call tomorrow with the alientZombies apologizing for even *thinking* about it, now that you've brought a .45-70 in. They's plum skeered of them 405gr loads. :D

You want something with really common ammo. It is cheap, and in a SHTF situation, you are more likely to find some in the field. An enfield in .303 brit just doesn't have common ammo.
I'd suggest an AK

I've got an ishapore enfield in .308 that I bought for $40 from a garage sale. :):):)

These can be found for $100 and you can then buy a case of surplus .308 for $150.

Much more practical than a .303 chambered gun.

I still vote SKS and 3 cases of ammo. :)

For that EXACT amount, the best value is:

A CMP Rack Grade Danish Springfield Armory Garand.

Cost is $350, plus $21 shipped to your door.

It will hold it's value longer than any stamped SKS or AK variant (not that I don't like them - they have their place too). It has history. It fires a powerful cartridge. It's purchase supports teaching marksmanship to LOTS of youngsters.

All considered, it's a no brainer.

Garands are nice... but 30-06 ammo might be tricky to get in a SHTF scenario..:D

Hmmm $200/case or $70/case? Granted 30-06 will take care of virtually ANYTHING short of tanks, lol.

All good suggestions. Nothing wrong with the "tactical lever gun". Even Col. Cooper like's 'em.

That said, what flavor of SHTF are you envisioning? The one place a 20-round mag or 30-round mag might come in handy is "riot control". Most other scenarios are covered by the guns you have.

And .45-70 is great for Zombies. You don't even have to hit 'em. At close range, the muzzle blast will blow 'em to pieces.

I guess i'm getting carried away with this shtf stuff my 21inch 870 and a couple ammo boxes full of slugs and buck would probably cover every thing I need in a depression- riots, lutters, and food. As for the only real life shtf senerio I see would be a great depression, and it's like I tell every one a dpression today would be alot diffrent than the one we had before because I believe nowdays people would kill you over your food and every thing else you own.

Basically any pistol or black powder caliber can be used for zombies. You just need to make sure it is loaded with sterling silver hollow point general purpose vampire-werewolf rounds. With silver up to over $6.00 per ounce these get pricey but they are well worth it.

If you're going to shoot zombies with an autoloader you'll probably have to get something belt fed and water cooled. Standard milspec ammo just goes through them. You may have to shoot a zombie 300 times and actually sever his arms and legs to get him to stop.

LOL how about one of those shotguns that shoots two shots from one barrel when you pull the trigger just right??

Dont forget your machette for close HTH with The Damned.:D
