What is the best sling for an M1A?

Don't know yet what the purpose is.....gotta think about that some more.....

The two main types of slings I can think of are the standard military-type and the modern three-point slings.

What are the benefits/disadvantages of each?

What do you guys use?

Thanks!

M 1907 military works for me. The old GI web sling isn't half bad but it will wear and the metal rattles a bit more than I like.

As I understand it, the military style is good for carrying the rifle on the off side shoulder either muzzle up or muzzle down (which is faster to shoulder, but a little awkward sometimes, in my opinion). Also, it can be used for extra stability. Assuming you are right handed, you just wrap it under your left elbow and over your forearm. It helps "tighten up" your upper body without the muscle force and fatigue which can cause you to shake. Never had much success with this myself, but I'm more of the armchair quarterback when it comes to shooting...read alot, still shoot bad. :(

The 3 point slings allow you to carry the rifle in a wide variety of positions (port arms, low ready, "patrol carry") with the majority of the weight on your shoulders instead of your arms. I use one on my hunting rifle because it makes it very easy for me to lug it around while still being ready to shoot. It's also very secure for getting up into a ladder type stand. The typically sling from rifle forearm, over the off side shoulder, under the strong side arm and attach to the butt (like a guitar strap). I really like mine, since I can't seem to master using the standard style for shooting support anyway.

Also, I forgot to add that the 3 point slings tend to allow the rifle to twist (top of the rifle goes to the outside). It makes the magazine poke into my stomach/hip/back, which is annoying.

Have little experience with the 3 point other than trying it on an SKS. I didn't care for it but I don't think that was the ultimate weapon for it, either.

The M1A is a battle rifle. I carry it slung, cradled, or in the hand. The military sling in a solid position is a great help in prone or sitting, which was its original purpose. So I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want to *wear* it.

There is a story about SAS troopers way back of beyond who earned the respect of the locals because they left the slings off their FALs and so kept them in their hands or very close by. They were known as "men of the rifle". There are worse things to be called.
