Can I use a standard M1907 sling on my Springfield M1A 18" scout?

I see two lengths offered, 48" and 54". Which will work better?

I want to be able to use full-size 20rd mags with the sling. This is my best gun to take hunting this year and I also have a fit-flush 5rd mag for it, too. Any issues with either mag type and the M1907 sling?

Who makes one / has one for the best price?

yes

how tall are you?

no

google for turner saddlery

The long sling will be needed if you shoot an AR and have long arms. Otherwise, go with the shorter one. I'm not sure what you mean by it interfering with the magazine. In a shooting position, the GI mag may contact your arm, but it's not going to be applying any pressure.

For carry, the magazine is going to be a bit bothersome.

I like the Turner sling or the Les Tam one for heavy duty match use. If it's mainly used as a carrying strap, you will be adequately served with a surplus "MRT" marked sling. Make sure you get one with steel, not brass hooks. The Turner AWS would be an excellent choice.

Who really wants to mess with the 1907 sling while hunting???

I dont think the deer is going to give you a "prep period" like you get in High Power Matches.

And even if you were able to sling up NM style before the hunt, chances are using the 1907 sling correctly would cause your arm to fall off before sunrise due to lack of circulation if you dont wear your NM shooting jacket also.

Taliv: I'm 6' 3".

Bwana John: I don't want the thing wrapped all the way around my arm while hunting. I agree that would be really tedious. I just want to use it to create a 3rd point of support (in geometry, 3 points define a plane). I'd use my elbow to provide that third point by adjusting the sling just right. That wouldn't be that big of a deal... I'm doing that with a piece of rope right now since I don't yet have a sling for the M1A.

I like the cotton M-1 or nylon M-14 sling much better, I even prefer it for match shooting. The extra long M-14 E2 sling would be even better for carrying the rifle while walking.

I guess I just really dont like the way the 1907 sling adjusts lenght and tightness with hooks and keepers.:banghead:

[math nerd mode ON] In Euclidian geometry, three non-collinear points in space define a plane.

Bwana: I'll try out the M1907 first, and if I don't like it, I will get a cotton one or search out this M-14 E2 sling you mentioned.

I've been wanting an '03 bolt action for a while, along with a Garand, an M1 carbine, an SKS, a mauser and a mosin-nagant, so I will have plenty of other rifles to put the sling onto if I don't like it.

Thanks, guys.

Here is a photo of the type of sling I am refering to and that I prefer on my M-1A (circled in red). It is actually more historically correct for the rifle, and as I said I prefer it for match shooting also.

Right, but show me 3 points that are on a line, and I'll show you a bent ruler
Hence the qualifier "In Euclidian geometry"
