Thanks a lot for the input! Ill definately be looking into several of these. As I have been thinking about this, I am wondering if I would be better served(read more likely to take it with me) if I (shuddering) should look into more of a pocket type pistol. I am loathe to find myself looking at 32 or 380s but it doesn't seem that I may be solving my dilemna by carrying a slimmer gun of roughly the same porportions necessarily. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would certainly prefer an iwb carry of a larger gun, but if I find myself stuffing a j frame into my jeans pocket, I may want to look into a flatter pocket size gun. I have been looking around and I am curious what everyone thinks or has experienced with the kahr pm9 or 40? My main concerns are whether IV can be carried discretely in jeans pocket in a pocket holster, whether or not they are reliable and given that I'm a bit leery of carrying my glock, given its safety design and short, light trigger, so I may have the same fears with the kahr. Nonetheless, my j frame has no safety, but I feel good about the work it would take to get it to fire if snagged given the long tough trigger pull. I haven't really gotten my hands on the kahr, so I don't know much about them. I am assuming there is a marked difference in power between something of that nature and a seecamp or naa 380? I would really appreciate anyones thoughts on this or any other models that may serve me better. Thanks again for all the 1911 input. I will likely end up with a 1911 type based on what ice learned here, as well as a pocket gun.

My daily traveling companion is also a Rock Island Compact, with CTC lasergrips. Same size as a Colt Officer's ACP, 3.5" bbl. Carries 8 rounds of .45 goodness.

Colt Defender

In the short, slim .45 category I've had good luck with my Colt Defender. With slim grip panels and a Kramer horsehide belt scabbard holster, it rides high and tight on my belt and conceals easily. It has been reliable through about 700 rounds of mixed ammo. With a Wilson 7 round magazine, the gun holds 8 shots total.

I carry a Kimber UCII, with thin Alumagrips. I added a relibility package myself, by cleaning under the rear sight, so to speak.;)

For a materials snob like me, which small 1911 based .45's (Or 9's) have a stainless frame? I have throw away guns and "For the rest of my life" guns, no aluminum or plastic. I carry a throw away plastic gun now, but would like to carry a real lifetime gun. (Don't flame me, if you think guns should have plastic and aluminum I hope you enjoy them.)

Colt Officers, Wilson Sentinel

Two that come to mind are the Colt Officer's model in stainless (3.5 inch barrel 1911) and the Wilson Combat Sentinel (carbon steel with available stainless looking Armor Tuff finish, 3.6 inch barrel). Here is the Wilson Sentinel:

"best "smallest" 1911 for ccw?"

What, nobody has answered "full sized" yet?

Well, if you must deviate from the general consensus, the Colt Combat Commander.

I've been very happy with my Kimber Pro Carry II 4"... alloy frame so it's relatively light, too

Springfield EMP 1911

I absolutely LOVE my Springfield EMP 1911 9mm.......for bedside, conceal carry, as my backup weapon (for work), etc. GREAT all around small frame easily handled reliable flawless beautiful handgun (can you tell I like it). It was a bit TOO well made (high tolerances/ the ramp angle was SO steep that hollow points would catch at the top of the ramp going into battery) until I got about 200-300 rds. through it. Now it's smooth as silk......

Kimber Ultra Carry is my next purchase. Currently have the Eclipse Ultra, it is the right size but a little heavy for summer carry. Also have a Kahr P40 which works well .

In my opinion a "keep for life" gun shouldn't be carried. From what I understand, if you have to use it, there is a chance it will be gone forever.
I almost bought a real nice Kimber, but I would be upset if while carrying I had to part with it.

I carry a 4" Kimber Pro Carry II Stainless.. great carry gun, light, smooth, and reliable.

I bought my EMP 9mm for daily carry. I like it and it is a very accurate little pistol.

On Sunday I let a long time shooter (marksman) at the state range shoot it and, having never used the EMP - not to mention with my handloads in it - fired five rounds at 15 yards in a nice two-inch group. I was impressed, and it's my pistol!

So, how does the Para Warthog stack up in this discussion? I don't own one, but had been looking at them, only because a friend said it would be his favorite carry. I personally will hang onto my Springfield P9 until I find a suitable replacement. By the way, lots of nice hardware displayed here.

Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II .45 ACP 3" 25 oz unloaded.

The warthog had problems when it first came out. I have no idea if they solved those problems
