Best Truck Gun

My thought are this. A good truck gun has to remain unloaded, for legal reasons, at least where I live. So as much as I love levers, levers are slow to load. So I would go with a magazine fed rifle. It has to be stainless because it might sit in a damp truck for awhile. It has to be fairly small. I don't need a super large or long range caliber. I like my new Ruger 77/44. Its in the truck. And thanks to you guys who have been helping me think about optics options.

I always left my Saiga-12 in my trunk. Stick mag full of slugs, stick mag full of #6.

I like an unconverted Saiga rifle with 16" barrel in either 7.62x39 (preferred) or .223. Officially, it's a "sporter" should an LEO take an interest in it; but at heart it's one of the better made AKs with all the ruggedness and reliability.

Also, the bore is chrome plated so no worries about condensation and bore rusting if left in the truck during severe weather changes.

I like the unconverted Saiga too. No LEO drama, compact, reasonably powerful and accurate.

That said, I also like Marlin 336's in .30-30. They are cheap at most pawnshops, accurate, reasonably powerful and simple guns.

Ma Deuce rides in the cab, doesn't take up any room at all. THIS is the best truck gun, period.

Otherwise depends on your use... a quick hike through the woods during hunting season? Defense? Varmints? No one rifle serves all those purposes well. For defense I always wonder at what range are you being threatened that a rifle is better than a handgun, and at 200 yards are you really being forced into using deadly force? If I lived on a ranch and needed to "off" vermin I could justify carrying a rifle in my truck, otherwise I enjoy hunting too much (and would never poach) to make it a spur-of-the-moment affair and don't really see the point of it except for fun.

I gotta disagree, personally I think the MK 19 aint bad...

What ever you got that you don't mind leaving in the car, and risking getting banged up, and will get the job done, a carbine mosin isn't a bad choice, neither is pretty much any bolt or lever gun, or a solidly built auto.

Lever in 30-30, 32 WS, or 35 Rem.

Mini 14, or 30

M1 Carbine

Scout Rifle of some persuasion

Add SKS to this list and that's pretty much my opinion too, although I'm not too sure about the M1 carbine since I like a trunk gun to be able to penetrate soft body armor if necessary (as this incident demonstrates).

From the FAQs.

Best gun?

14. Please don’t ask “What’s the best gun or caliber?” There is no single “best” gun or caliber.

"Truck gun?" What do you plan to shoot? If I wanted to pack a long gun that would enable me to be ready for most anything I would take a short 12 gauge pump with 10 each of bird, buck and slug. Covers most things nicely.

I think a lever action 30-30 would be a good choice. With the Hornady LeverEvolution rounds, it is a legitmate 200 yard plus rifle. I'm guessing that would cover the majority of your needs. I would imagine that they would require a bit less maintenance than a semi auto.

I have no idea if my choice is the best or not, but my WASR10/63 folder comes close to your criteria..............

I don't really understand the concept of a "truck gun." Can a person justify needing a long gun to defend yourself at 200 yards? Long guns are too slow and unwieldy for self defense in a vehicle anyhow.

Maybe I'm wrong?

B-G-Dan,
Think in terms of shooting things that need shooting.

Racoon problem in the barn? You see one leave the barn and scoot up a nut tree. Park the tractor under the tree, get the gun out of the truck and get rid of him.

Woodchuck burrowing under the garage? You catch him in the open when you pull in with the truck. Grab the gun from under the seat and solve the problem.

Black bear bothering the beehives? You see one approaching as you're getting ready to leave the property for the night. Use the truck gun to save the sweets for yourself.

More uses than a country boy can think of, offhand. But we know 'em when we see 'em.

I don't know , SKS, Marlin 3030, Pretty good for Hogs and such, I think I'd want a little more Penetration for trucks, 30-06,45-70. When is truck season where Yall live?:banghead:

That's cool you live in a state where you can shoot black bears for messing with your bee hives. Where is that again?

I live dead center in the most dense black bear population in our country and most likely the world. I have seen dozens of bears over 600 pounds and many closer to 800 pounds so not only are there a LOT of them, they're BIG... and though I fully support and participate in hunting them it grinds my gears to hear people talk about poaching.
