Best Value in Highly Accurate .308 Bolt Rifle?

I see that there are a number of threads on "sniper rifles" that discuss both semi-autos and bolt action rifles. I would like to pose the question a bit differently. Restricting the discussion to bolt action .308s, what is the best value for a highly accurate rifle? I am not talking about a $2000 semi-custom, limited run rilfe. I would like to know about a rifle preferably costing $600 or less that is high quality and will produce very accurate shots with a good scope. I am also interested in good values in older, used rifles.

I'd have to agree with the Savage. I don't even own one of the things but I've shot several of the 11X series and all were very accurate.

Best value would probably be a Savage with Tikka T3 behind.

You can get a heavy barreled Savage 10/110 for $450. It would likely shoot a consistent 0.5MOA and often much better (at least the specimines I have shot do).

A Tikka T3 Varmint would cost about $550-600 and would probably shoot better than a Savage. I have seen a T3 Varmint in 308 shoot a consistent 0.3MOA and another in .223 do similar groups. My own T3 Lite (308 Win) shoots a consistent 0.75MOA but as well as 0.3MOA of I let it cool down for a long time between shots.

If you're gonna pour money in it later then buy a beat up Rem 700 and have a smith work his magic.

Hmmmm....never noticed mine being ugly. I guess I was too busy marveling at how a cheap rifle can shoot so good, how easy it is to switch calibers, how good that factory trigger is, how I can make neato ragged holes with it, etc.

Now that I step away in the cold light of day and give it a good look. Damn, it's pretty damn sharp looking. Yup, you're high.

I have heard a lot of good things about some of the low end Savage rifles as well as the Weatherby Vanguard, in regards to performance for the price.

Probably find a charles daly mauser that can do some good.

otherwise, go with the savage...I personally don't own one, but have shot some and I have no complaints other than NOT having one.

I have seen them chambered in the Lazzeroni calibers, as well as most others...and the really nice thing is that if you get a long action (30-06), get the barrel wrench and headspace gauges and you can go from 35 Whelen down to 22-250 with that same action.

EDIT: I just checked wally world and they carry a Charles Daly Field grade 30-06 for $343.00 and a 7mm mag for 368.00...those are both blued....here is the link

Followed by the Savage, although I'd replace the Accu-Trigger.

I've gotten good reports about the Howa Supreme Varminter, too.

Plus with it you get interchangeability of caliber. Numrich has a bunch of spare barrels, or at least they did last time I looked there.

Savage, no doubt. For the cash, it is the most accurate. I have one and thinking about getting another and doing a Scout type setup. At $450, why not?

I have a T-3 that I think the world of, but for value and accuracy I'll give the nod to Savage. Short time ago I picken up a 110 package gun in .270 for 234.00. First of the week brown truck should be bringing Timney trigger, 2-7 3200 and burris mounts.....all things are well in My world....Essex

Anyone given a thought to a Samco Mauser in .308? I got mine for about $100 (there's the cheap part down), and you could do what you will with it--even sporterize it--while saving money all the while. Far short of your $600 limit, and a hoot to shoot .

OK, Savage is the winner. But which one? An older one without the AccuTrigger or one with? One that can be adjusted down to 1.5 pds or one that goes only down to 2.5? A varminter or a general hunting rifle? Long, heavy barrel, free-floating, etc., or something else?

Savage Model 10 any reasonable glass will make it a one holer. Mine is MOA to 600m when I do my part. Loading 168gr BTHP Molly over 45.0gr Varget

The Tikka IS a great rifle but pales in comparison to out of the box accuracy

Get the Accutrigger...my 2.5 is fine, never adjusted out-of-the-box

With a 4-12X Leupold RIFLEMAN series scope from Wally world (a whopping $250.00) you'll be just at your 600.00 limit. Secondary you could go with a cheaper scope to be under 600.00
