I have an 870 Express 12 ga cut down to 19" so it is not choked. I would like to install a choke to pattern buckshot tighter, is there a cost effective way to do this without buying a new barrel? Thanks for any ideas.
If you have access to a machine shop and the skills to do it, it might be cost-effective, though I'm not sure what the thickness of the barrel wall is if it's a cut-down barrel.
Do you still have the original 9"? That could tell you if there's enough metal for a choke. Do you have the choke tube(s) you'd want to use?
If you have to pay someone to do the machining, and you have to buy tubes, it might not be cost-effective, unfortunately, even if it's feasible.
I feel your pain! I've been lamenting over my 18" 870's patterns since I got it a year ago. I really don't mind the pattern with buckshot so much, but it's really annoying to not be able to shoot a bird out of the air because if flies between the shot! To me, a shotgun isn't much count if you can't shoot birds with the darn thing. I've looked at replacement barrels, but what I plan to do is just take the existing barrel to a 'smith and have them install a Rem-Choke setup. That way I can just use the choke tubes I've already got for my 1100. I think the shop work will be around $100. I don't know if that's cost effective to you, but it would be worth the money to me.
I'll check with a shop, I still have my original choke and the barrel is definitely thick enough. $100 isnt the end of the world and is cheaper than a new barrel if someone can do it for that much. I want a short barrelled gun for hog hunting because a 28" barrel is a nuisance getting in and out of a truck with. Thanks for the replies.
Wall thickness for either would be the same, except where the choke is if your barrel has a fixed choke other than cylinder bore (in which case the metal will be thicker at the choke).
