I am at the point of mounting a Leupold Mark 4 LR/M1 (30mm tube, 50mm objective) onto my Winchester Stealth. What is the most favored ring/mount setup for long range shooting?

Why do so many tactical rifle folks mount their scopes on weaver bases?

Thanks,
Rich

Dovetail?
Most I see are on Weaver - Picatinny because of the wide selection of bases and mounts. Some Talley & Kimber dovetail bases.

How long is your long range? You need a "tapered" base to add 20 moa elevation if you will be shooting at 1000 yards, not for 600; I don't know just where the dividing line would be, don't know your calibre anyhow.

I have Leupold QRWs on a Mo's Picatinny base on my Savage, same rings on an Accuracy Speaks base on my AR flattop; Burris Zee Signatures on modified Weavers on my old Winchester because the base holes were not aligned and the inserts let me correct for that without eating up scope adjustment.

Farrell's are well thought of and not as expensive as some.

I recommend a base that extends out over the barrel so you can set your scope far enough forward in case you crawl the stock on bench or prone.

You want the most sturdy, strong, non-moving solution you can find with the minimum number of pieces & connectors.

On rifles that support it, such as the AI, I prefer one piece monolithic base & rings, since there is only one piece of metal between the scope tube and the receiver itself. This isn't possible on the Rem and Win receivers.

I suggest the following as a very durable solution:

1. Badger 1-piece base, 20 MOA incline

2. The lowest Badger rings that will fit. Aluminum is fine (consider that the scope body is aluminum!)

I also suggest lapping the rings once installed, and making sure to non-permanently loc-tite the base to receiver screws.

I don't see too many tactical setups with dovetails either. Check out the pics on Zak's recent thread.

I happen to use a nightforce base and TPS rings. Badger is one of the best, but they are priced as such. As Jim said, depending on how far you are shooting you might want to get a 20 MOA base.

Rich,

Like Zak said, Badger all the way. Here's my Winchester LA Tactical Rifle with a Badger base and rings, and a Leupold 6.5-20x50LR M1:

Not Weaver -- Picatinny with 20MOA built in.
