It's interesting to see other folks opinion on what they like.

OK, now there are a few that are getting a bit carried away here. What part of the

Coopers?? yeah, I have several of them, Sakos?hhmmm yes a few, Kimbers? oh yes a couple of those too but they run a bit more than $800.;)

Here's a lowly NIB Ruger 77MKII with factory wood that I paid $550 for. Havent shot it and most likely never will so I cant say how accurate it is.

That is a nice piece of wood on a Ruger! But I have to agree with you..I wouldn't shoot it either....why be disappointed ;)

Now that the Winchesters are out will Ruger step up their game? Maybe, a little competition never hurt.

Given the Hawkeyes lining the used racks and priced on clearance right now at Cabela's, while the new Model 70s went from a full rack to out of stock in no time flat, I'd say that Ruger had bloody well BETTER.

I'm not biased against Ruger. I own a fair number of Rugers and I shoot matches with one of their pistols. Come to think of it, I own more Rugers than any other gun brand.

Have you actually examined one of the new Hawkeyes closely? Yes, it's matte, which has its upsides and downsides. What I found unacceptable is how rough it feels to operate. It's not like there are no other hunting rifles around for under a grand. Why would I get one that feels like it left the factory before they finished it?

Winchester's new wood finish looks and feels good to me. It's not "matte", but I don't especially mind a matte finish. It's not Ruger's wood that bothers me.

Ruger took a pretty nice rifle (with a reputation for terrible accuracy, deserved or not), and took it down a good few notches -- while selling it as an improvement. It doesn't take anti-Ruger bias to notice that.

Sorry, but being very disappointed in a particular new Ruger product (third major M77 revision, or is it fourth?) does not equate to some irrational bias. In the context of the hundred-plus competing rifles in the shop at the time, I didn't find the Ruger to be worth buying.

I was thoroughly disappointed with the last one I handled...I looked in the chamber and expected to see a pile of sand. :D

I think winchester (fn) have a winner with those new mod 70.I own a new fwt in 300 win mag and its really well made.

the Ruger RSI 'International'
Classic design yes, but as Dr. Tad Hussein Winslow points out, the Mannlicher style is "decidedly European". Not that there is anything wrong with that, but the o/p has asked about 'American looking' rifles.

I personally agree that Cooper, Kimber and Sako are better-finished rifles than the Winchester, Ruger and Remington cited by the o/p; but as they cost significantly more, they don't meet his $800 criterion.

Havent shot it and most likely never will so I cant say how accurate it is.
What are you waiting for?

tiwil, how does your Featherweight shoot? Seems like pretty much everyone likes the new Model 70s' looks, but no one knows how accurate they are. Please give us a range report.

I really can't comment on the accuracy because my shooting skill are not really good but its shoot as good as my other rifle with me shooting.Reading from other forum they seem to be very accurate and consistent.

The forum is 24hourcampfire.com.There is some good info on the new model 70 and most of the review are positive concerning accuracy, action smothness ect..
