I've got a ruger mkII that is a malf-o-matic. I clean it, i lube it, try various brands, I still get ftes and double feeds. While if i really wanted i could probably get it up and running well, I just don't like rugers. Any ideas on a really nice, accurate, and reliable 22 pistol I could get used for under 500 dollars?

thanks,

All of the S&W 41s I've seen have been pretty good. They're only a touch more than $500, I think.

S&W .22 revolvers are good. I've seen a Dan Wesson .22 revolver that was pretty nice, too. I'm not sure what prices either sell for.

My Marvel 1911 .22 conversion is sublime, but it requires you to have a 1911 to mount it on. About $300 plus the 1911.

Hope this helps.

Out of the box, my pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 41 was scrap iron. It needed a replacement recoil spring, an expensive trigger job, and glue to hold the rear sight in place. Once I got done fooling around with it, it turned out to be pretty reliable, although it's less accurate than my High Standards.

Model 41s cost around $800 these days.

I bought a Ruger Mark II a year ago that's been a nightmare, and won't ever buy anything from Ruger again.

If I were in the market for a .22 long rifle plinker, I'd choose a revolver: much less to go wrong with the gun.

I'd prefer an autoloader, similar mechanics and feel to my center fire pistols. No need to complicate stuff when i teach new people, just a consistant set of instructions.

A good deal

If your looking for a good deal, an accurate 22LR, then consider the Russian Bakil IZH-35m. This is the russian olympic target pistol. I was skeptical about it at first, but now that I own it, I'll never sell or part with it.

The IZH has only 5rnd mags.

has a fully adjustable trigger, you can adjust creep, draw, trigger reach, yourself.

Its olympic grips support the hand and are adjustable.

Its barrel is mounted low to decrease muzzle climb.

comes with a scope mount.

This gun is now a main player at my range on 22 silouette night by most of the members.

I paid under 400 for it.

whoops, forgot the gun also has to be PRK legal...that narrows it down considerably :banghead:

Sorry to hear an earlier poster had problems with their S and W model 41. I bought a model 41 in 1998, it is by far the most accurate pistol I own. It has had thousands of rounds through it with no problems. It came with the 7 inch barrel. I also got a 5 1/2 inch barrel for it that I mounted a leupold 2 power scope on it. The barrels are simple and easy to switch out. If you shop around you can find 41s for around the 500 mark.

Dunno about PRK legal ....dunno if PRK legal knows a helluva lot....

I do know that Older S&W Revolvers in J and K frame are great! I'm partial to Model 18's myself.

In non wheelies ( that's PRK for not a revolver) The old Colt Woodsman, Old High Standards are great guns....

Didn't mean to poke fun at PRK - I just got off the phone with someone out there that must be the last "Valley Girl" . Me - being a Southern Boy - I was polite, but somewhere in CA is a valley girl trying to figure out what the hell "tumped", "soppin" and "saucered & blowed" means.

I really really hopes she asks her college boyfriend that attends Berkley ...this might be good...especially the last two.

:D

The IZH-35 is on the Olympic Pistol drop test exemption list.

I' ll be picking one of these up as soon as they arrive in early 2005.

SIG Mosquito. Retail at approx $300.00

Before you dump that ruger. Buy the volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. That may cure your extraction problems. It's a cheap solution that could save you $$$ in purchasing a new .22. I put the Exact Edge in both my Rugers and havent' had any extraction problems. I'm also shooing Win Dynpoints (500/$10 at Walmart).

If you're deadset on a new .22. I have both an IZH 35M and Sig Trailside. The trailside is more versatile, while the IZH is a bullseye gun. The IZH is a steal for what you get.

As much as I love my Ruger 22/45, you did specify "other than a Ruger" so I would have to go with the Browning Buckmark.

OTOH, I've never seen that new SIG before. Sweet! Although ... a SIG with an external safety?

I own two Ruger MkII 22/45s. One is a 5.5" Bull barrel and one is an eight-inch slab-side "Great Eight".

Neither has ever produced a malf, shooting high velocity Winchester Super-X or CCI Mini-Mags. I agree that a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor would certainly be an option. As far as the double feeds, well I have no advice there.

I won't brag about the accuracy of my two, because accuracy is not what you are concerned about. But mine have been absolutely reliable for years now...

I hope you can perhaps solve your problems, or buy something else that gives you some shooting pleasure.

Like perhaps a Model 18?

I prefer the Ruger to the Browning, but since the word is "no Ruger", I too would recommend the Buckmark. They are pretty good, well proven and have good support.

Tell me more about the new Sig....That looks like just what I have been looking for....I love all my Sigs and have bben hankering for a 22lr that look like the P series

The Sig pictured above is the 'Mosquito' - a 90% scale .22LR training pistol due to come out around the end of the year, possibly early '05. Sigforum may have more details on it.

if you want the BEST 22 pistol, take that one you got back, and get a different ruger that works.

If you get a mkii that works, you will never want anything else.

(Fortunately,) My experience with Ruger's .22 resembles that of poster nitesite. I own a the "competition model" KMK-678GC with 6/8" slap sided barrel that I shoot at the range almost every weekend. Although, I would prefer a somewhat nicer trigger characteristic I refrained from tinkering with it as it's otherwise a great gun in every respect - accurate, reliable and dependable. I've even shoot my Ruger at 100 Meters with a handgun scope mounted on it and it was a lotta fun!

I also use it for formal target competition of German shooting association BDS (where many competitors enter with much more expensive European rimfire match pistols like the Walther GSP, Hämmerli 208 and 280, Feinwerbau's AW93, the old ERMA ESP-85A or whatever) and I do well with it.

One thing I especially like is that the Ruger (and the S&W M41 that I likewise respect, for that matter) still looks like "real" a pistol, unlike most of the competition that resemble strange-looking shooting machines.

I admit that nowadays I'd probably opt for the S&W M41 (I've already shot the 7", 5 1/2" variant and a shortened special order gun with red-dot sight), because it has a better trigger. Still, the Ruger serves my needs perfectly, so I can't rationalize a switch.

I am sorry for the guys having trouble with their .22 Ruger MK pistols. Seems there's something wrong mechanically on some specimen.

Karate

What stv said. It's 90% the size of the P226. 10 round mags. Already been released in Europe. Here's some info, however, it'll help if you can read German. :D Sig Sauer Mosquito

"Like their large model the SIG SAUER P226 the MOSQUITO offers 100% to function and precision and with only 90% of the dimensions."
