Better grips to pocket carry a J frame?

Unfortunately pocket guns are compromises.....to conceal in a pocket they need to be small and light etc. As for comfort while shooting, small guns are a compromise, LOL. Im not trying to be a smartazz thats just the nature of the pocket gun.
The grips Smith & Wesson put on those guns are actually not bad providing you don't shoot them a lot. I dislike pocket carry so I carry J-Frames IWB. You may try Uncle Mikes combat grips, three finger hold but three finger grips are harder to hide plus you have to find them NOS as they quit making them a while back.
Sile grips make copies available from CDNN, Smith & Wesson sells grips as well. The Internet is your friend when looking for grips, holsters, etc.

Its going to be a trade off for pocket carry. I've got small to medium size hands and have done pretty well with the factory wood standard J frame grip. The rubber boot grips feel better - but I've adapted and learned to use the other.
If your using the wood factory grips you might try a Tyler Grip Adapter, or go to the boot grip like they are putting on the new models. Past that, your getting a pocket full, I would start looking at an IWB or OWB belt holster and wear a loose fitting shirt not tucked in.

I put Pachmayr Compacts on my 642. I still pocket carry it. However, the grip can be visible when carried in my pants with smaller pockets. But hey...it shoots so much more comfortably...especially with those darn +P Buffalo Bore loads.

+1 for the standard wood grips and a Tyler T-Grip. It took me a long time and a lot of 'other' grips to figure that out. It's what's on my 649 right now.

I've got some Pachmyr unigrips on my Taurus, made for a S&W frame.
I do have pants with big pockets, and I love the things.

The Pachmayr Compacs are the best non-laser grip for the jframe in my opinion. I have tried Hogue, smooth wood and plastics, textured plastic, stock rubber and more. But I settled on the compacs on all of my jframes. I like them so much I find it not worth it to go back to a laser on any of my 3 jframes one of which used to sport a Crimson Trace. They are the most functional and in my opinion one of the better looking grips out there. If you try them, I bet you will love them.

+3 on the factory stocks and the Tyler T-grip adapter. Perfect for pocket carry with little added bulk and weight yet allowing you to get a proper grip on your J frame snubbie.

Ahrend's makes FANTASTIC grips for J-frame pocket carry (finger groove type or smooth type) that add nothing to the size of the pistol, and they're more comfortable and much more attractive than a revolver with stock grips and a Tyler T-grip.

Badger Custom makes great grips and they come in a boot grip and a slightly longer combat type grip. I have both on 2 different J frames and they are very comfortable to shoot.

It was mentioned to me that Taurus make a different type grip that fits on their copy of the J frame. I went to their website and ordered a pair for my 638. $9.00. They fit perfectly and have a little more width and depth but same flush fit at bottom of frame, lightly pebbled and covers the backstrap. Check it out.

As stated, all grips are a compromise. After trying everything under the sun, I've come back to the most basic of all: S&W magna stocks with a T-grip.
Both my pocket rockets are now dressed the same:
Whatever you do, remember that rubber clings to the pocket and hinders the draw. may "print", too.
All that and - remember to use a pocket holster in your pants pocket carry. In a coat pocket, I carry "naked"

I've used these for years. Cheap and dang near indestructible. Won't stick to clothing. Feels about like stock grips with a Tyler T grip. I usually stipple the front strap a little with a soldering iron.
I have them on J and K frames. Not on .357 Magnums anymore though, my hand can't take it, gotta go with rubber now.
