I'm gettin a check back from the gubment, and was thinkin' of gettin a rifle. Either a stock .308 or .270 Savage 110 w/ a standard barrel and coming with a scope (probably a Wal-Mart gun)

Or

A Savage 110 Police gun w/ heavy barrel, and I would attach optics (probably a Leupold) after I got the gun.

What am I looking at in terms of price for each of the 3?

Should I even consider a non-308 (seeing as how this is partially an SHTF for extended periods gun)

I had the 110FP in .308 with heavy barrel and it set me back $400 used. It was a phenominal rifle.

Currently, I have a 111C in .270 which I really like.

i've got the 24" inch model 10 in .308. surplus ammo is everywhere, so plinking is cheap. save up for the match stuff when my brother starts getting a big head. :)

i put a burris fullfield 2 on it (the ballistic plex reticle is nice) and i just ordered a boyd's target varminter stock for it. the crappy plastic one that it comes with is worthless. the choate stock would only be wielded by the largets of mammals, and the mcmillan defeats the purpose of a cheap rifle.

$500 for the rifle
$60 for a harris bipod
$250 for scope and rings
$150 for stock, pillars, recoil pad, set action screws, and installed swivel studs

a killer rifle for less than $1K.

The 110 is the long action, and the 10 is the short action. If you're going for .308 why not go ahead with the Model 10 for the short bolt throw without the free space?

Great choice, by the way. I don't think you'll be disappointed in a Savage for an accurate, affordable, and durable working gun.

Down here in AR, quite a few local dealers have the Savage 10s for around $350 for the wood/blued models from .243 up to and including 300WSM.
