Savage 10 Tactic, Savage 110, ACK!

Deer season ended and it seems everyone and their grandmother is selling a Savage rifle on Midwestguntrader now. Makes me feel like one hell of an idiot, I paid $250 for a Ruger 10/22 and another $340 for a used Ruger Mk. III for Christmas, putting of everything on my wish list.

So seeing as I turned out to be the only one interested in shooting a pistol the Mk. III went up for sale and I'm looking into a Savage Rifle. It will be nick-named the "Macho Man" no matter which one I buy, but I have to ask:

Between a $625 .308 Savage 10 "Tactic" w/ Heavy Barrel, and a $400 Savage 110 in .30-06, is there a $225 difference? I mean am I really getting anything special for that extra $200? The owner of the .308 claims sub-MOA at 100 yards, but from what little I've actually seen I'm guessing Savage doesn't make a 110 that can't shoot sub-MOA. Also I can't find anything about the "Tactic" and it's magazine system. Standard 110's have an internal magazine, but the "Tactic" model has absolutely nothing on page one and page two of a Google or THR search.

This thread goes out to Savage owners. Winchester and Remington guys, please wait until the Savages are no longer loose.

Try a search for the Savage 10fp which is the tactical model. They have changed them a few times in the area of barrel lengths and bolt spacing on the action due to different styles of magazine feeding. The late models have the accutrigger which is very nice, especially if you have ever shot one of the old style triggers.

Savage dicontinued the long action 110 FP/FLP guns a year or two ago. I have a 110 FLP in 300 Win Mag and it is one of my favorite rifles. I also just made a call to Savage a couple weeks ago and ordered a 110 FLP in 25/06 since they still have the barels in stock they will still make them for custom orders. The person at Savage that I talked to gave me the retail price over the phone and then I just had my local dealer call them and order it.
Hopefully it will get here in a couple months.

The Savage 110 has been around for a long time and has a very good rep for accuracy. IMO the extra cash for the tactical is an unnecessary extravagance.

It's going to make a difference depending on what you're going to use it for. I've got a 10FP, and its one of the guns I will never sell. But its defineately not a carry gun. If its going to be a bench shooter, its well worth the extra money to go with the 10FP. The hvy bbl is much better in this case. If its going to be a hunting rifle, then by all means go with the 110. Yes, it is accurate, and its going to be a lot lighter to carry. But they're two different guns for pretty much two different purposes. Greg

the thumbhole is my savage 110 accutrigger and this is the target for it shooting 120 gr barnes bullets. it is moa and hopefully ill have my new barrel on by wed.

BTW you said that 30-06 Savage 110 was $400 on there. Wal Mart sells new ones with the cheap Simmons scope for right under $400 so you may want to consider a new one if that's what you end up with. I'm not sure about the tactical ones but the ones from Wal Mart as a package I've seen can shoot sub moa with cheap Winchester soft point ammo.

I have a couple of Savages with after market barrels, that are routinely shooting sub .25 inch five shot groups at 100 meters. They are special in a special way...

they want to much for their stevens. they want to much for all their guns.

You can buy new for what they want used.

IMHO... a Savage 110 (more likely 111 synthetic) in30-06 needs to be under 300$ to justify used purchase.
