For HD and fun at the range I voted FNP-45. I've shot an M&P (40c) and really liked it except for one thing: the looong trigger. DAO and its friends are just not for me. Between the remaining two I picked based on the safety location. But fit in your hand might trump all else. Definitely go wrap your hand around them and see what you think.

If you really want to carry a .45 there's nothing like a single-stack 1911 with super-thin grips. I can't conceal anything thicker except in parka weather. :)

M&P - ease of carry, ergonomics, reliability, and best warranty in the industry. Consider the compact if you are going to carry it much.

In the same vein of the others, Springfield's XD-45. Grip safety and they also offer the thumb safety like a 1911.

While in the minority here, I just purchased the P345. I held the FN P45 and the S&W M&P 45, both of which are larger. In .40 FN & S&W have a smaller frame than on the .45. The Ruger fits my hand well and while I've only put 100 rounds through it have had no problems. I bought it used so the previous owner probably put a couple hundred rounds through it as well. It's easy to field strip (I did it to see if I could before using it) and clean and it is now my "all-arounder". Happy shopping.

Congrats on the purchase Delford. Was gonna get one of those tax time last year but my wife shut me down on it.
