AHSA is a DNC front pretending to be progun, it is trying to split off part of the gunowners vote to the Dems in 06 and 08 - BEWARE!

Excerpt Begins:
Guest host on Glenn Beck show highlights anti-gun ASHA Written by Jeff Garvas Monday, 26 June 2006 Glenn Beck is a conservative radio talk show host who claims to be neither Republican nor Democrat, and his talk-radio show is very popular among conservatives. Beck recently joined CNN Headline News of all places to host a nightly television show themed along the lines of his radio show. The two shows are lightly interconnected, and Beck regularly interviews other radio show hosts on his television show.

Imagine the surprise regular viewers had Monday night when Beck's guest host Diane Dimond of Court TV fame (where she tracked the Michael Jackson fiasco) interviewed Bob Ricker of The American Shooters & Hunters Association. Dimond introduced the interview by slamming the NRA, estimated there are between 190 and 250 million guns in the United States, and then stated "I just think there are too many of them out there. Who needs an AK47 to go hunting?"

Dimond and Rickers went on a tirade of agreeing to more and more tired old rehashed gun control proposals, starting with asking Ricker how effective "gun buy backs" are to asking why not have mandatory background investigations at gun shows. It couldn't have been scripted better by the Brady Campaign.

This, of course, is just the begining of the story. If you don't know who Bob Rickers and the ASHA is you're going to need some duct tape to wrap around your head, as Glenn Beck would say, because this might just make your head explode.

If you're a fan of the Glenn Beck Program you're going to wonder why the show would take this path after his radio show website linked to this World Net Daily coverage of the UN Conference on small arms on June 18th: NRA warns of U.N. gun control.

Is the Clinton News Network pushing the Beck program towards liberal tendancies and guests?

Bob Ricker used to work for the National Rifle Association in the 1980's. An excellent resource on Ricker and ASHA can be found on the Gun Laws News website. According to that website the ASHA's president has a very interesting past:

... a close advisor to the John Edwards for President campaign. Prior to working for John Edwards, he was the Policy Director for the Democratic National Committee. Mr. Kavanaugh served as Senator Edward M. Kennedy's Chief of Staff and worked with him through both his 1994 and 2000 re-elections.

Why would the Glenn Beck Program be pumping this organization and it's efforts to strip law abiding gun owners of their rights under the guise of being a pro-hunting organization?

Ricker testified in the NAACP junk lawsuit against gun manufacturer's too, proving just where this man's loyalties to gun owners lare. But what bout ASHA? Is it really that bad of an organization? It depends what your thoughts are towards the NRA, the AWB, and gun control. There is an excellent recent story titled Saving Hunters From the NRA where ASHA comes out swinging at the NRA in an obvious effort to divide and concur hunters away from others in the pro-gun movement. Sadly, some are going to buy into it without realizing who is hiding behind the curtain.

But the truth of who ASHA and Bob Ricker really are becomes incredibly clear in this boston.com story: Taking aim at gunmakers:

''There needs to be more pressure put on the gun industry," he said. Referring to one of the ways convicted felons fraudulently get their hands on guns, he said, ''Clerks in gun stores need more training. If a 21-year-old woman comes in and wants to buy 10 .44-caliber Magnum handguns, a red flag should go up."

Ricker has become executive director of a new group based in Washington, the American Hunters and Shooters Organization, that he says wants to promote responsible gun regulation. He calls it ''the progressive alternative to the NRA." (emphasis added by OFCC)

One has to wonder how any hunter (or gun owner in general) could possibly perceive Bob Ricker and ASHA to be favorable to their heritage, history, and rights after writing this piece in 2004: Bush Dances with the NRA Devil (by Robert Ricker):

As it turned out, in April of this year, Senate Democrats and several moderate Republicans banded together to stop the gun lobby's immunity legislation by amending it with measures to renew the federal ban on military-style assault weapons and require criminal background checks on all gun sales at gun shows. This revolt by the Senate stunned the NRA. The immunity bill with the assault weapon ban and gun show provisions attached went down in flames 92 to 8.

Today, we find President Bush facing a slightly different dilemma. The 1994 ban on military-style assault weapons is set to expire in September, at the height of the presidential election campaign. That means Uzis, AK-47s and Tech -9s will be back on U.S. streets unless Congress acts to renew the law. The president has stated publicly he supports the renewal of the ban despite the fact that a handful of ultra-conservative leaders in the House of Representatives are holding fast to their promise to the NRA and are refusing to allow a vote on the controversial measure.

...the piece Ricker wrote in 2004 had this byline at the end: Robert Ricker will be the keynote speaker June 15 at Town Hall, Seattle at an event hosted by Washington CeaseFire.

Not so much Glenn. Not so much.

AHSA is a Democratic front, a classic wolf in sheep's clothing and is trying to split gunowners vote off to the Democrats in 06 and 08 - BEWARE! Also see NRA ILA note on this outfit: http://www.nraila.org/HuntingAndConservation/Diggerscorner/Post.aspx?ID=23

Apparently they were just on CNN the other night too, criticizing the NRA and pretending to be the "pro-gun" side for a discussion on gun control.

OK, so we have a guy who founded Coalition to Stop Handgun Violence,
We have Teddy Kennedy's former Chief of Staff, and...

We have Ray Schoene as President (donated $5,000 to Handgun Control Inc and $1,000 or more to Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, etc.)

Finally the whole shebang is set up by Hillary Clinton's PR firm and run out of the same offices as that firm and the DLC... sounds pretty pro-gun to me

I can't believe that the media thinks we are that stupid...

He calls it ''the progressive alternative to the NRA".

That is too funny!

"Progressive" to a leftist is code-speak for socialist/communist. After all if you're not with the program, you're not maching with the tide of history. It (socialism) is "progress", after all!

This is like Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot standing shoulder to shoulder and pledging their support for the second amendment.

You are not against progress are you (or world peace)? You must be a reactionary!

Jeez, it never ends. :banghead:

A progressive alternative to the NRA is like a wet alternative to a fireplace.

To the original poster, I am normally pretty good with language but I had a tough time understanding your post. Has Glenn Beck come out in favor of the AHSA recently? Also, why do several events in your post seem to have taken place several years ago? I know the AWB poison pill amendment was back in 2004 before the elections. That's where we got the 4 horsemen picture.

"I just think there are too many of them out there. Who needs an AK47 to go hunting?"
-------------------------------

I just love that phrase...it sounds so ignorant it illustrates the retards who are in office and their ilk. With basic education gutted by the Jane Fonda generation, we've produced leftwing retards who run for office and exist in other Gov. posts. If this retard had read the bill of rights, he would have noted there is no mention of hunting in the 2A. Then he could have gave that tired weak collective right (National Guard) argument. Neither of which holds water...

Why don't we and people on other pro-gun forms send this info to FOX, MSNBC Tuckers Show, Washington Times, National Review, Human events etc. Then they could get the NEWS out. Isn't that the power of the pajama media. Sorry liberals but it would do no good to send it to liberal News Media as it would be ignored and if not written up in a negative way. Don't forget powerline and little green footballs. We could make news happen.

"If a 21-year-old woman comes in and wants to buy 10 .44-caliber Magnum handguns, a red flag should go up."

sounds like a girl i wanna meet. she'd prolly get something other than a flag up for me.

Shooter94

I just love that phrase...it sounds so ignorant it illustrates the retards who are in office and their ilk.

Wrong....it is a crefully crafted phrase! It implies the only reason to own a gun is for hunting. Therefor if you don't hunt, you have no legitimate reason for gun possession. Fence-sitters are swayed by such arguments. Even more so when we can't make cogent aguments in opposition.

And, since you only "need" a gun for hunting, why don't you just keep it locked up at the club, or better yet, at the local constable's office?

The point is, once you start using the other side's lexicon, you have already lost the argument. You are left arguing degrees. Evidence: the "sporting purposes" clause in the GCA.

disclamer -- I love Glenn. :)

Glenn himself tends to be supportive to luke-warm of RKBA. I think he used to be wishy-washier on it, but at some point he all of a sudden started mentioning his big ol' German Shepherd and gun on the air, so I presume he had some kind of "awakening" a few years back with a nutcase or som'n. I *believe* he had a CCW training, and he's definately not a Feinsteinian "for me but not for thee" type.

Anyhow, this particular guest host was a disaster it looks --
Here's a transcript:

If you're a listener/watcher, I'd suggest writing, letting the show how ridiculous you thought the sit-it was, and requesting they not come back.

I'm a "sick freak"

Always remember that Glenn tries to be funny. He had a lot of joke stuff when he started on WFLA Tampa. He is a recovering alcoholic and likes to tell you this.

I liked the joke parts of the radio show on the first day, Jan 1, 2000 (I think). He had a lot of support the troops rallies. At one, non-political rally in north Tampa, he introduced Mrs. Tommy Franks. Then he said "sorry this is a non political rally and the Governor was not invited. (boos) however, I am proud to introduce the President's brother. (applause but Mrs Frank's was more)

I have never seen so many flags waved by people at once. Maybe 20,000 people were there.

He is very pro "support the troops". Some wackos wanted to stop Veterans from raising the flag on Memorial, Flag, and Veteran's Days on an Anna Maria Island park because "the flapping will disturb the birds". I'm not making this up. 100 sailboats nearby with sails up, but the flag would bother birds.

Glenn would take your calls and draw attention to problems like this. It was easy to get through to him. I called many times. If you went along with him, you were a "sick freak"

I'm a fan

and try to catch his shows as much as possible.

This is a surprising and disturbing developement.

Then again he likes "American Idle" too.... "American Idle" makes my head explode.

I bet if enough of us called in and or wrote to him he would see.

edited to add

I just read the transcript, and this was not Glenn it his "guest host"
some commienewsnetwork idiot.

people like this make my head explode.

It is the same bovine excrement you hear all the time blah blah AK47 blah blah hunting

"Who needs an AK 47 to go hunting?"...
One of the guys I work with made a similar comment once and my countercomment was that nobody "needs" a Corvette as a commuter vehicle.
He got my point...:)
I listen to Glenn Beck from time to time and he's ok.A tad frenetic and shrill for my taste at times but thats just cause I'm and OF...:D

All right, you sick, twisted freaks, get your duct tape ready!!

I didn't see the show, but the oroginal post clearly states that it was not Glenn Beck; it was a guest host (wasn't he sick Monday & not on the radio either?).

I'll bet that Glenn will address this, if he hasn't already, and I'll bet that he had nothing to do with, nor control over, what the guest host did.

beerslurpy: I want people to be aware of these sneaks

beerslurpy,

It was a guest host as "gunsmith" noted, it wasn't Glenn. I don't know the details beyond that.

As for the links, I want to give everyone a picture of what these guys are up to. You don't know me from Adam but you know the NRA-ILA website. These jokers have a long history.

Here are some more hotlinks about them courtesy Eghad on TFL. Triggerfinger has a GREAT SITE!

http://triggerfinger.org/weblog/entry/6695.jsp be sure to check out his hotlinks to John Lott's website and his links about how they changed their domain registration to hide their true nature as a Democratic front http://johnrlott.tripod.com/2005/08/Democrats-change-registration-of-fake.html. For triggerfinger you have to keep clicking on the hotlinks and read them through to get to all the details. I've put much of his original post below, when you go to his site many of the phrases will open up as hotlinks to source webpages.

Triggerfingers Post: Make no mistake, we have existing pro-gun organizations working very effectively on training, safety, hunting and range regulations, and so on. We don't need another organization doing this... especially if we can't trust it.

And we can't trust these folks. How do I know?

Their President is Ray Schoenke, who seems clean at first glance... but in 1996 his firm donated $1000 to the campaign of Torricelli (D-NJ). New Jersey is a gun control paradise and Torricelli has voted consistently in favor of gun control. Ray himself ran for the Democratic nomination for governor of Maryland.

Their executive director is Bob Ricker, infamous traitor to the gun industry. He used to lobby for us, before he decided that the role of Brutus was better suited to his temperment. He's provided testimony in prominent firearms-liability lawsuits -- testimony against the gun industry.

Their president is John E Rosenthal, who has worked with the "gun violence prevention efforts" of Boston, Massachussetts. He co-founded the gun-control group "Stop Handgun Violence", and suggests that the gun laws of Massachusetts should be the model for the country. He's spent a great deal of money on anti-gun advertising, including a national billboard campaign in collaboration with Handgun Control president Michael Barnes.

Their co-chairman is Jody Powell, Washington lawyer, whose experience includes service in the administration of Jimmy Carter, and whose tenure as White House press secretary immediately preceded that of James Brady. He lobbied against the impeachment of Bill Clinton. He doesn't seem attached to the truth; "now [the truth] almost doesn't seem to get attention paid to it anymore."

Their board of directors includes Joseph J Vince, whose career in law enforcement includes time as an ATF "special agent" whose experience includes undercover work in the "intelligence division". That means infiltration, folks. And here he is heading up a supposedly pro-gun organization... well, never mind the tinfoil hat theories, here's some good juicy stuff. He's also the president of Crime Gun Solutions, a gun control consultency business that has done work for the infamous Violence Policy Center. He describes America as "absolutely the best place for a terrorist to equip himself with guns" and claims assault weapons are more powerful than rocket launchers in a 60-minutes hit piece.

The credit for this story goes to reader Jay, who wrote in with a tip about them, saying he was suspicious of their real stance. He did some research, picked up on the Bob Ricker connection, and wrote them email asking which firearms regulation measures their group opposes, since they support the "assault weapons ban" and bans on "cop-killer bullets". No response to the email yet, but I'll pass one along if he gets one.

Thanks, Jay. These folks are definitely not on our side.

UPDATE: More details on DHS, a Democratic consultancy that owns the domain name, from Countertop Chronicles; and more on Crime Gun Solutions from The War On Guns.

UPDATE: GunLawNews has more details on the organization, particularly the financial angle.

UPDATE: John Lott has still more.

UPDATE: The War on Guns was there first... but he used the Mainstream Media to get the message out, so his column will be several months in the pipeline.

UPDATE: Welcome, Outdoors Unlimited visitors. That's an impressive amount of traffic for one tiny-print link in the middle of a very busy page. I hope you'll feel free to look around the blog, and bookmark it to come back later; I cover firearms and liberty issues regularly, with an emphasis on ways that individuals can make a difference in the political process. You may also be interested in my coverage of the Seegars and Parker cases, one or both of which may well put the 2nd Amendment before the Supreme Court in the near future. I've also asked for input on other cases that need that kind of coverage. Please feel free to leave a comment or two pointing out what you think I should be covering.

UPDATE: The NRA's Digger's Corner had this story on July 28th.

UPDATE: The group has changed their domain registration to conceal their connection to the Democratic consultant group.

Digging through my musty archives.....

I have had both a flood AND an IDE disk controller failure,
but I did recover all my files, including this from 2005:

AMERICAN HUNTERS AND SHOOTERS ASSOCIATION

The Democrat Leadership Council, DLC, (www.dlc.org) has
through its favorite PR firm, DCS, set up a website,
American Hunters and Shooters Association, AHSA, that
purports to be a group of "responsible" sportsmen in
favor of the Democratic National Party gun control policy
and opposed to the NRA.

The internet domain name www.huntersandshooters.com
was registered 25 Apr 05 by DCS (Internet Advocacy Group),
600 Pennsylvania Ave SE, suite 200, Washington, DC.
The 25 Apr 05 paperwork gives the AHSA address as
600 Pennsylvania Ave SE, suite 200, Washington, DC.
On 3 Aug 05 the registration of the domain name
www.huntersandsportsmen.com was changed from DCS
to AHSA. Expect an address change and then denial that
DCS or DLC set up AHSA.

The DLC occupies Suite 400 at the same adress.

DCS (dcscongressional.com) describes itself as:

"What We Do:
DCS utilizes cutting edge technology to create a winning
Internet strategy for elected officials, campaigns and
organizations. Our experienced political and Internet team
will work directly with campaigns, political organizations,
and their strategic partners to develop a plan that combines
creative, research-driven messages with aggressive online
advocacy. We will work with your fundraising, press and
issue teams in their earliest stages to develop effective
Internet strategies, full media plans, and fundraising
strategies that can be turned into potent and powerful
solutions."

DCS publicity lists its clients. Every congressman listed is
a Democrat.

ASHA is an on-line advocacy group created by DCS for the DLC,
Democratic Leadership Council, and existed as a website created
by DCS before it had any members, strange for a real people
organisation. Actual support for hunters and sportsmen at AHSA
is sparse, beyond its website, which is full of pro-gun control
nuances, apparently tailored via poll research to appeal to
gun-owning Democrats who voted Republican over the gun
control issue.

President of AHSA Ray Schoenke donated $5,000 to Handgun
Control Inc. in year 2000.

ASHA Executive Vice President John E. Rosenthal is also
President of the AHSA Foundation. He promoted restrictions
on legal gun ownership in Massachusetts and joined Handgun
Control President Michael Barnes to campaign for national
gun laws modeled after those of Massachusetts.

Next the National Socialist Workers Party will sponsor a
Holocaust Museum Association, and act wounded if we
question their bone fides.

This is a surprising and disturbing developement.
It shouldn't be surprising though. Back in the '80s, the same people tried the EXACT same scam with the "National Firearms Association" (NFA).

It was the same kind of anti-gun "pro-gun" con game.

It immediately started coming apart at the seams when people started requesting a roster of their Board of Directors. They initially refused... mostly because their BoD and HCI's had a considerable degree of overlap.

The NFA died an obscure, humiliating death. So will this farce.

The current groups using the name National Firearms Association
are not related to the 1980s goup of tke same name.

The National Firearms Association of Canada appears to be a legit
progun group.

The USA-based group called National Firearms Association
includes NFA Title II firearms owners.

The current groups using the name National Firearms Association
are not related to the 1980s goup of tke same name.
That's true, and should give you some indication of the totality with which ASHA's predecessor collapsed in on itself. You virtually have to know WHICH usenet posts to Google in order to find ANY reference to it. 99.99% of shooters have never even heard of that NFA, and I'll wager the same thing happens to this ponzie scheme as well.

Does anyone know when there will be a 60 minutes investigative story with the sneaky taped interviews to expose what this group really is? I know I am dreaming.:D

Kim:

I'm not "60 Minutes," but under my byline in GUN WEEK, the AHSA has gotten a fair amount of ink since my original expose a year ago. I believe GUN WEEK was first to break the background story about the AHSA.

Recently, AHSA withdrew an application to join the Outdoor Writers Association of America as a supporting member organization.

It appears this group was set up, much as was Americans for Gun Safety, as a 'front" or 'stalking horse" sort of organization to give the general uninformed public the impression that sportsmen and gun owners are divided on certain issues or candidates.

Dave---------I have read Gunweek and your writings. But,really if this had been a Repub front group set up to do something like this it would be a big story in all the MSM. I am disgusted with our biased press. Of coarse the lefties see the NRA as a Repub front group.

You mean

it's not the National Republican Association?:neener:

Some of my friends are shocked that I would vote for Bill Richardson (D NM)
before gun grabber Giuilanni or Johnny McLib...

Does anyone know if Glenn has said anything yet?

NRA started as a member organisation in 1870 set up
by civilian marksmanship shooters on Long Island.
AHSA started as a website in 2005 set up
by the Democratic Leadership Council.
