Does anyone here compete in biathlons in the states? And has anyone heard of any warm weather biathlons or such events that would include cardiovascular endurance with marksmanship? (sorry for the run on sentence)
I've always had this idea for a type of competition that isn't for "the elite" but does require a bit of effort to successfully complete (and wanted to host competitions). And here is the basic idea...

Participants are placed at a starting line and told "go" one at a time just like a biathlon, only here their jogging instead of skiing. Once they reach the first set of stages, they will shoot at five targets prone at around 50 to 100 yards. If the participant is able to "clean house" without a miss then your awarded to an extra point to your total score at the end of the match.
If a participant misses a target he or she has two tries to continue to fire until the board is cleared this goes for all stages. After the first stage has been cleared then participants would jog down to the second stage where the participant would fire from the kneeling position at 40 yards. Lastly the participants would arrive at the third stage, obviously standing at 20 to 30 yards.
Now this isn't the last stage, the last stage is three targets that are fired at in the prone once again. Then the participants finish their round with a jog to the finish line. Each stage is no more than and eighth of a mile apart and there are judges or referees from start to finish at each point.
The match would consist of 4 heats then a final round to determine a winner. If there is a tie in points the shooters would go into a sudden death round.
Now their are more rules and stuff to the game, but I figured that this would get us started. My older brother and I had a variant of this that we would do when we were kids. Our standard rifle for this was an SKS rifle.

Maybe you could do golf cart races with shooting. No takers on the running part of it.
One issue I see would be equipment. The other would be location that made the running and gunning possible. Sounds unique.

I can't run for crap these days (I really need to start up again), but I'd do that. Sounds like a good time to me.

At one of our 3 gun matches, for the final stage we used every stage. Over 100 yards of movement, named the concept the mogodiseu mile.

Fun to do, not so fun to score and tape and it took forever to finish.

There has been one for the last 2 or 3 years in August outside of Alpine. A buddy of my from Fort Davis competes in it. Call me silly, but the notion of a long foot race in the desert in August just does not seem like a wonderful idea.

He likes it. Do you need me to track down the information?

hey double knot that would be awesome if you could. yeah it was an idea and I've been busy with work. But once I get a sizable group together I'd even do just private matches that were invite only.

I only had half the information wrong about the Run and Gun. This year's was in September, not August, though it wasn't exactly cool. It was in Pecos and not Alpine. So it was slightly cooler by a couple of degrees and slightly further north.

I will PM you my buddy's contact info.

I have heard of people using pretty much the same rules as biathlon, just with bikes substituted for skis.

Sounds cool...I would think a hunting orientated one would be VERY interesting. Heck you could do bow or rifle.

Strap on your hunting pack with game bags, first aid kit, hydration bladder etc (your typical mountain hunting pack) with lets say a minimum weight of 15 lbs. And be given a general heading to go find your "bull/buck/bear/goat/sheep/antelope" etc. this way basic orienteering would play a part as it does when out hunting.

Time would also be a factor, the quicker you get to your shot the more points you get. But bearing this in mind you only have a certain (short as in less than 30 seconds?) amount of time to take the shot as game doesnt sit still and wait for you. So you would need to balance speed with being able to make an accurate shot with heavy breathing etc.

You would approach the stage directly behind a screen of camo netting, boulder, tree line or such. The judge would release the net or what ever and you need to locate and shoot at varying distances with no range finders allowed like on an archery 3D shoot.

Points would be given for heart/lung, lung, liver (10-7-4) a wounding shot like a gut, back, hind qtr would completely void the stage. A miss would just not score hit points but incur no penalty.

A final stage would be a blood trail/track like is done in bow hunter safety class. Not sure how to score this. Maybe a 10 minute time limit and either 5 pts or -5 pts for lost game?

Now that would be very fun and a good warm up just prior to hunting season. Having said that I would think it would need to be done well in advance of hunting season so as to not spook area game. Or done in the off/breeding season.

Thanks for all the info (and please keep it coming) I'm finding out a lot of stuff. And can't wait to go compete and even grab a group of people locally here close to Austin and head out and "heat up some air"

I really wish you good luck on finding events. I did one biathalon, and I got my ass kicked by 14 year-olds.

At that point I was a decent skier, but didn't shoot...I was using a borrowed rifle. It's a fantastic event, because of the strange mix of skills.

The Pecos Run 'n Gun was August 14th last year - I competed and had lots of fun though it kicked my tail. You run the course with the centerfire rifle and pistol of your choice - you must carry all ammo and water you think you'll need. I hope to be able to do it again this year - Smokey (the match director) and the other members of the club who put on the match are a great group of folks.
