While I am not at all in favor of any more "gun control", I would love it if someone could figure out how to significantly reduce the amount of violence using firearms. Regardless of how you stand on gun control, you have to admit it is getting out of control. IMHO, we need to follow the route we have taken with drunk driving and texting while driving. That is, the use of severe punishment, instead of a slap on the wrist. Use a gun in a crime, minimum of 20 years.

Many/most states already have laws like that. But those charges are often dropped in the course of plea bargaining. Some 98% of cases are plea bargained.

You drank the "gun violence" Kool Aid, and have been indoctrinated into the rhetoric.

Why should someone who murders someone with a gun receives more time than those who kills someone with a hammer, knife, or by any other method? If your wife, child, loved one is killed with a knife vs a gun, are you going to feel okay with them getting less time vs the other way around? Are you going to feel better with the fact that they died by knife, bat, or hand violence vs "gun violence?" A murder is a murder, and they all should receive the same amount of time regardless of what tool they used to kill. We should be focusing on reducing violence and murder PERIOD! Removing guns from the equation isn't going to stop thugs, drug dealers, suicidal people, domestic violence perpetrators, etc from killing and being evil.

Plus, we already imprison more of our citizens than any other country on the planet earth. We're 4% of the world's population, but house over 20% of the world's prison population. Not only that, we imprison our citizens including those 17 and younger longer than any other nation on the planet.... How's that been working out for us thus far?

We don't have a (antigunner term) "gun violence" problem. We have a violence problem. We have a violence problem because we have a cultural and mental health problem. Democrats don't want to solve or address the main cause because doing so would hurt their narrative and voting base. Instead they attack the symptom and lawful gun owners. This is just another "identity politics" wedge issue for them to pit sides against each other, and to make Republicans (who are typically progun) appear to be evil and uncaring. Their goal isn't to solve any problems, but rather to create more.
