I don't have these in my town, but I was out of town today, in a smaller, midsized town (93,000 people), and stopped into this Big 5 place.

Wow, you can reaaaaaallllly get taken there. The Barska force was strong within the optics area - must be a full line dealer for them. Feel sorry for smaller town folks who are not wired to the 'net - you can get your head taken off real easy. Said thanks as I walked out.

And I got a Marlin 1894C there for less than I can find them on Gunbroker, and with no shipping. Just like anywhere else, Caveat Emptor.

like any retailer, they are out to make a profit and its up to the buyer to know a good deal.
I personally bought my Mosin Nagant M44 at Big 5 and was out the door for $100 after tax and background check. In other words, cheaper than if I had ordered it online.

I'm with FourTeeFive. I just picked up a Marlin 1894C as well. The price was much better than any comperable gun purchased anywhere else locally. I could buy the same gun for the same price on line, but then I would have to pay for shipping, pay for the transfer fees, and risk being scammed on the internet, so Big V was not a bad deal at all. I guess you just have to shop arround.

In my experience, occasionally they discount their ammo like they'd rather just give it away. I'm not sure why. However, I do stop in whenever I pass Big 5 to see if I can take advantage of their kindness.

I worked at a Big 5 for about 8 months(worst job I ever had). Thing to remember is their standard mark up is crazy but sale prices are usually pretty good, just don't pay regular price for anything. They ask a lot for their Mosins when they're not on sale too.

What you won't find at Big 5 are high end or a manufacturers top of the line but you can definately find bargains. The people that want Zeiss aren't going to go there in the first place. I view them as what WalMart would look like if they only carried sporting goods.

They were selling Smith & Wesson 4" SpecOps folders for $8 and 5" folders for $12.

This went on for about two months...

I bought one whenever I drove by and had 5 minutes to kill and ended up giving them to friends.

Add me to the list of 1894C buyers from Big 5.

I believe it is store policy to give you the last sale price on an item, if you ask.

Also, they seem to have a lot of loss-leaders, like $80 walkie talkies for $20, stuff like that.

They are overly-proud of their ammo there though. WWB .40 cal FMJ 100 pack was $35 on sale, walked next door to Wal Mart and got the same thing for $29, regular price.

Our Big 5's here in Orange County, CA currently have on sale Remington 870 Express 7-shot 12-gauge Shotguns for $319.00 with a $30.00 factory rebate, for a final price of $289.00.

This compares to the going rate of about $364.00 for the same thing at the other local shops.

I'm still waiting for them to bring their M1 Carbine price down to earth.

Swing by, trot in, say hi to pleasant lady at the front, walk over to the gun counter, see 3 nines, walk out.

I bought a 1894C from them also - cheapest deal going around here. (plus, they actually had one).

However, I'd be hard-pressed to think of any other deals that I've ever found there. Even their "on-sale" 10/22's are more expensive than the standard price at Joes Sports.

Good for some things, not for others.

I went into a Big 5 to buy a shotgun. They apparantly have a policy that the bolt must be opened by the clerk. (It was a pump.) The clerks were two girls in their teens who couldn't figure out how to operate the action on a Rem 870. Plus, they ignored my repeated comment that I could show them.

Another bogus "I am woman hear me roar" nonsense, I guess.

I didn't buy at that store, and will never shop at another Big 5.

Probably just the store policy you mentioned and not a feminist power play or anything.

Oh yeah, you can get taken to the cleaners there. I picked up this Mosin for $99.99. (1936 Tula Hex)

I got fleeced I tell ya.

Store policy=giving opened gun to customer.

Result of women's rights propaganda=ignoring older white male who obviously knew more.

If you watch the Sunday newspaper inserts from Big 5 stores, you will sometimes find a good deal on ammo. Like everything else and everywhere else, you have to be choosy.

Most of their stuff is way overpriced, but their sales are usually good.

I have a Yugo Mauser I bought there on sale for $99, it's a great rifle. Took FOREVER to go through the process with the guy behind the counter though.

I refinished it recently.

Yeah, another skrewin' here... a nicely arsenal-refinished Moisin 91/30... for $89... :D

However, the purchase did take a bit longer than necessary, more so than at the local gun shop... they must not sell a whole lot of guns at the local Big 5, since they didn't seem all that experienced with the paperwork and background check procedures... I almost had to walk them through it...

But the prices there are quite good, at least on firearms (even not on sale -- at my local store, at least) and ammo... haven't checked optics.... and yeah, they do need to bring those M1 Carbine prices down ($999? For this?)....

I've noticed that. Someone in their pricing department needs an education on beat-up M1 Carbine values.

I don't think teenage girls in the USA have ever heard of women's rights. They're too busy worrying about if guys think they look "hot".

I see you all get bit by the Big 5 bug too
My '44 dated M44 100_2916.jpg
