To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say,
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip.

He certainly had alot of great songs. In fact "The Masters call" is a reason for my screen name. I certainly hope to see the series by Max should be awesome.

When I'm in my shop doing leatherwork, if I'm not watching a western, there's a good chance I'm listening to Marty Robbins' gunfighter ballad collection.

It's hard to believe, but my 17yo son and his friends have several Marty Robbins songs on their playlists. I'm still not convinced that they're not making fun of him, but they sure play "big iron" and "el paso" alot.
Anyway.....I'm looking forward to seeing @MaxP on Amazon prime!
    Congrats MaxP!

Out in the west Texas town...

AAAAHHHH!!!! Stuck in my head... It'll be there all night. And probably tomorrow too.

Anyway, you guys are better than I! I don't trust myself with a handgun (for hunting).

Both those songs were featured in a very popular game "Fallout:New Vegas" among a bunch of other great old western songs.

Well yea!.... gotta listen to big iron while toting the Ranger Sequoia putting the hurt on some deathclaw's:thumbup:

Maybe that's what subconsciously started my affinity from revolvers, LOL. Or maybe it was the old western theme town my grand parents took me to. I cried like a baby when the train got "robbed", but I did come home with a shiny cap gun!

Let's get this thread back on track!

Managed to catch the show last night, I can only imagine how stressful it was getting that close to a big Cape Buff like that!

Definitely prefer your show over some of the "canned hunts with a camera" that pass for hunting shows.

Those trackers had their work cut out for them for sure.

@MaxP couple of questions if ya don't mind...

    1) have you ever taken bovine game with the .44 mag or .45 Colt (properly loaded)? If not, are they not suitable?

    2) Why the .500 JRH over something like the Linebaugh cartridges?

    3) has the current political situation in South Africa made it harder to hunt there?

Sorry I didn't address this sooner.

    1) Yes I have. I have also been in on bovine kills with lots of caliber/bullet combinations. The .44 works, it just doesn't produce the "hurt" of the bigger calibers. I've used a number of them on bovines. The .45 Colt loaded hot is pretty good. The .480 has served me well on a number of them, to include the biggest bovine I've ever taken. With the right bullet they are all suitable, I just prefer making a bigger impression if possible.

    2) I've had both the .500 Linebaugh and .500 JRH for quite some time. There are a lot more good bullets available in .500 versus .510. The .500 Linebaugh is typically loaded in the mid-30,000 PSI range, the .500 JRH we load in the high-40,000 to low-50,000 PSI range. The fat Linebaugh case eats a lot of cylinder wall, and I don't recommend loading the .500 Linebaugh anywhere near the operating levels of the .500 JRH. Frankly, when facing something big, heavy and mean, I want as much reliable velocity as possible. However, the .500 Linebaugh is still one of my personal favorites.

    3) Not that I noticed. I thought it might be an issue and it absolutely was not. Hire a good "meet and greet" outfit to collect you at the airport and get you through the bureaucratic pain, then they whisk you off to a hotel that sits behind a wall with barb wire. It's in their best interest to keep you safe and whole.

    Hope this answers your questions.

So then say I wanted to take game the size of Kudu. I'd probably pay for a hunt in Texas what bullet recommendation would you seek in .44 mag caliber Id like to use my 629.

280 grain A-frame at maximum velocity. It'll do a lot of damage internally and go deep.
