The other day I saw a couple boxes of Hornady 460 grain .50 cal conicals. What would such a heavy bullet be good for?

No.

I mean, what's the point of that much mass in a bullet being launched in a rainbow trajectory from a rifle that most likely doesn't have the sights to compensate?

A 500 grain .45 cal bullet, I can understand. Maybe the 460 gr 50 cals are for folks who put flip-up receiver sights on their 50 cal rifles?

Inside of 150 yards or so, I don't see any real advantage to such a massive bullet. Beyond that range, the extra weight *could* be an advantage, except that 50 caliber is typically not used at those ranges.

I guess the point is, that heavy bullet isn't intended for 'typical' usage. Kind of a specialty bullet, like almost every bullet made for the smokeless cartridge reloaders.

Love the big bullets!

While I have no superior knowledge about shooting big, heavy bullets in a 50, I LOVE the big bullets out of my 54 cal Renegade and Hawken.

I fell in love with T/C's 540 grain Maxi Hunter and am constantly looking for some since they are out of production.

These bullets, some custom 480s and some custom 560s not only shoot well out of my 1 in 48 twist in the TC guns, they HAMMER deer.....in brush or out.

Rainbow trajectory? Yep, but out to 100 yards which is a LONG shot for me here in Indiana I set the gun at 60 yards and dont worry about it. Longest "had to " shot for me was the last day of season, last hour when I saw a doe accross the field draggin a back leg. Poor thing could barely walk and I had to try. Aim high, a bit into the wind..........a measured 267 yards and she had no more pain and suffering. NOT a shot I would recommend or do under ANY other circumstances...........with ANY bullet.

Everyone has a fav but mine will always be a bullet around or above 500 grains.

I'm taking donations if anyone has any of the 540 grain 54 cal Maxi Hunters by the way. ;)
