Just traded into a birth-year gun, my first. This one is an S-prefix serial-number S&W 27-2 with a five-inch barrel. I’ve had a long-standing appreciation for five-inch 27s, and this one joins an N-prefix that I’ve otherwise posted about here recently.

It came to me with a set of vintage-y non-relieved factory Target stocks (I’ll have a to grab a pic of those separately), and I’ve installed a set of Bear Hug grips that were previously mounted on a different 27. The gun is posed on its presentation case - I’m pleased to have that along with all the usual tools and papers, etc., but this gun likely won’t spend a lot of time there - to the range with this one soon, Lord willing!

If you feel so inclined, chime-in with your own birth-year revolvers!

My birth year gun would be a flintlock, lol.

Not really, but it would be a "Pre" model S&W. The oldest revolver I have is my M58 which dates to 1967. Your "new" M27-2 is magnificent, congratulations on such a find; the 5" barrel gives it a perfect balance visually, I think. I'm not sure I'd shoot it more than a few times if it were mine, just so I could say I had. The finish is too nice to risk scratching up from use. It won't shoot any differently from the newer N prefix you have. My own 6" M27-2 dates to 1977 and was ANIB when I bought it a couple of years ago. I've fired about three cylinder loads through it, cleaned it up and waxed it, and it will live the life of Riley as a safe queen. I have a M28-2 that gets all the use as a range gun.

That is a great birth year gun. Last year I was shopping for a 3.5 inch model 27. I hoped I might run into a birth year gun, but that wasn’t really a priority and what I got is off by 3 years.
A few years ago I bought a used, 3 inch 686. When I got home and was looking through the case contents I saw it had the test fire cartridge they used to have to include. The date on the little yellow envelope was the month and day of my birthday. It was test fired on my 48th birthday. Not a birth year gun, but it is a birth DAY gun

That is a gorgeous Model 27. Congratulations! :)

I got this j-frame a few weeks ago and discovered we have the same birth year.

It was an absolute mess when I got it. I've scrubbed almost all of the rust off of it. I replaced the springs and cleaned the insides. It goes bang just fine, but still needs some more TLC.
