Today is my 18th birthday, my mom asked me what I wanted to do today so I said we should go shoot up some of that ammo I've got. I sure had fun today! I fired about 550 rounds of bulk .22 LR plus a box of stingers, 50 rounds of my blackpowder .22s, about 7 or 8 cylinders from my .44 New Model Army, about 5 cylinders each from my NAA blackpowder mini revolvers, I had a bag of 60 balls for my .50 rifle and now the bag is empty! I shot them all, all of them!

I got my brother to shoot my New Model Army too, he was scared by it because I loaded it hot. But after he got over it he was loving shooting it! I need to get him to come with me more often!

I also got some longer shots in on a bad guy target at 100 yards. I loved the challenge, and managed to touch it a couple times with the .44 and the .50 muzzleloading rifle.
I even stretched out that Super Companion of mine to 100 yards. I was using smokeless powder and the supplied 30 grain bullets with a little lube and a Remington #11 cap. I outfitted mine for accuracy and actually touched the bad guy sized target at 100 yards two times. I don't know if God was just giving me a little surprise in the form of accuracy, but I'd like to think that I helped! Although I did outfit mine for the maximum accuracy achievable by a pistol like that with a rear sight and oversize grips. :neener:
I probably just "Forrest Gumped" that one.

All in all it was a good day, I finished off my Pyrodex (although I think they bought me more for my birthday) and I finished off more ammo than I probably should. I also got my brother and mother to enjoy the shooting sports, that's definitely a good thing! It sux being out of rimfire ammo though. But my college is near a Big 5, I can stock up on all the ammo I need now that I'm 18 and don't need my parents to help buy it. How delightful! I also saw another gun shop nearby, they had powder! I'm totally stocking up on some stuff I need! I love being able to buy what I need.

Thank you! Today was amazing. I feel like a lot of spiritually good things happened today as well, I feel closer to God actually. I almost had the opportunity to shoot a rabbit with my .44, that would have made such a great dinner! I need to go shoot dinner with my Remington New Model army sometime, I would love to have my handgun actually feed me dinner many times.

After we got home I opened presents with the family, I got nothing but shooting supplies and my very own rifle! :D I got a pound of Pyrodex, some really good hearing protection, blackpowder solvent, and a J.C. Higgins single shot .22 rifle sold by Sears. I kind of slipped them a hint the other night about that, it went something like me polishing it by the fire and really treating it well.

Then after that I went out and legally bought a pocket knife, a Zippo lighter, a lottery ticket, and a decent cigar. :) I'll post pictures of my new Freedom saver tomorrow!

WOW, congrats on a super fine birthday. Im happy everything went your way on your birthday. It sounds like you have a pretty tight nit family as well. Thats a wonderful thing also. Anyway, happy birthday sir!!

Keep up the good work. You're living a life that few people ever got the chance to, most teenage brains are damaged as you well know. As my grandfather used to tell me "enjoy your time as a kid, you'll miss it some day". I never understood what he meant until I was in my 40's. You on the other hand seem to be enjoying your youth, carry on and the rest of us will live vicariously through your adventures.

I know it's not a sharps, I know it's not a Winchester, but it's the EXACT rifle that I have always wanted. I know I've got bigger guns that could kill anything on this continent, but I always wanted to have a single shot .22 given to me by my parents. Perhaps I have read too many novels, I read about that thing all the time it seems.

So now I've got something to shoot my homemade blackpowder .22 LR ammo with!

I like the old .22 rifles a lot.
My first firearm was a 1940s Mossberg .22 semiauto that my grandfather gave me.

Among the firearms we bought we also have an old Stevens single shot bolt action kid gun. I liked that one, but the action felt a little too "tinny" for my taste. It sounded like I was messing with some spoons when I worked the bolt. But it does shoot well, I have fired it many times. I chose the J.C. Higgins because it reminds me of the first gun that I ever shot. We were shooting paper targets and .22 spinners out at 100 yards, and I hit the berm most of the time as well. But I definitely loved shooting, and I guess I was hooked from there on. That might explain why I love shooting berms as a backstop, it's probably why I've got one in my backyard for CB .22s and airguns.

Happy (belated) Birthday Levi - sounds like you had the "perfect" celebration! I turned 50 less than two months ago (4 days less, to be exact); and I'm supremely jealous of your fun.

I MUST jump off-topic and ask about the "J.C. Higgins".... That knob on the back of the bolt; after sending the bolt home on a fresh unfired round, do you have to pull the knob back actually cock the piece? The reason that I ask is that it looks remarkably similar to the Remington 'Model 33' that I somehow "acquired" from person or location unknown. Seriously, I'm thinking that I was asked to "Be a pal and hold onto this for me"; but I can't for the life of me remember WHO it was or WHAT the circumstances were! :uhoh:

Regardless; my son Matthew found it in the back of the gunsafe and we've since been having a blast (no pun intended) with it! While the Model 33 was an inexspensively built "loss-leader" firearm, with very rudimentary sights; this particular example is very precise when firing the "milk-carton containing 1350 rounds" of Federal .22LR at nearly all ranges. And the whole "pull back the bolt to expel the spent brass, ease in another round, send the bolt home, pull back on the knob and caress the trigger" manual of arms tends to set one back to a 'less stressful time"; and the targets reflect this. We're both consistantly more accurate with it than when firing "our own" .22's - whether his Ruger 10/22 or my own "Glenfield 75" (a Marlin, marked up in K-Mart livery) autoloaders. Both rifles were part of a long-standing tradition in my family; the Marlin was my 12th birthday present from my Dad; the Ruger was my 12th birthday present to my son.
But this little Remington is such a pleasure to shoot; both Matt and I fear for the day when somebody shows up and asks for his/her .22 back! It's just that much fun to shoot. I hope your "J.C.Higgins" turns out to give you much the same joy.

Reading about you loading .22LR ammo with black powder reminded me of an old friend who many years ago related stories to me about him and his brothers as kids on their farm shooting black powder .22 shorts. I believe he said his dad bought them through the NRA, for 5 cents a box. But, that was a looooong time ago.
 
Wow! What a righteous 18th birthday! Sounds like it really couldn't have been any better! I like how you used all your pyrodex, and then received more as a b-day present :)

I'm really glad there are other younger guys out there who really enjoy black powder shooting! I've been shooting since the age of 12, but when I started owning my own guns I started with nothing but cap n' balls for the first two years. I do not regret that one bit, gave me much appreciation for all elements of shooting.

Thank you! I'm really glad I got more powder, I finished a can and then got a fresh can afterward! What's not to like? I also made a little bullet keeper that I tied to the trigger guard. I took a piece of leather and cut .22-ish sized holes in it, then put a 12 inch leather thong on it to loop onto my gun. It holds seven rounds, the rim stops them from sliding out, but you can easily pull off a round without much force. I liked having ammo at my fingertips, it's so convenient!

I definitely am enjoying that new .22 rifle I got. I made some CB ammo from primed .22 LR hulls and Crossman .22 airgun pellets. They are so darn quiet I hardly can hear anything but the firing pin. First round I shot I wondered if I even put a fresh round in, I racked the bolt and a smoking shell came out. I pulled the bolt and looked in the barrel and saw no pellet. It's for sure a good way to save money, I can convert cheap bulk ammo into .22 CB's without any problems. It's so easy a child could do it!

Something is relaxing about a single shot .22 that you have to cock. I like that relaxation factor, for me it's more enjoyable than a 10/22. I love how simple it is as well, it's real easy to clean and maintain. I've always been a slow shooter, my entire family likes repeaters or semi-autos. I like old single shot rifles and black powder smoke. It's an American thing!

Head down to your local post office. usually on the back counter there is a selective service card. you fill it out and turn it in. in about a month you will get some card in the mail. it seems like nothing because it would take an act of congress to bring back the draft however. depending on what you do in life you may need that stupid card. I know about 20 years ago when my brother joined LASD los angeles sheriff department he needed that stupid card. Spent all weekend looking for it at our parents house. So depending on what you do in your future sometimes you will need that card.

Don't think for a second that I'm going to hesitate to register to vote, I'm taking FULL advantage of my God-given right to vote now. I'm going to help vote the b******s out, California really needs it. I'm going to go and register for the draft ASAP as well! Next week I'm buying a good shotgun too, I got birthday cash. And what I have left over from the shotgun will go to the NRA. Believe me, I'm taking full advantage of this.

Funny story, yesterday I was at Rite Aid pharmacy, I was going to get a new wick for my Zippo. Now you wouldn't believe this, but they wouldn't sell me a THREE INCH PIECE OF STRING too small to garrote a mouse with. The lady at the counter said it was tobacciana, and that I can't buy it because I didn't have my I.D. with me.

Lighter fluid I can kinda understand, you don't want kids setting themselves on fire. They'll do that, I've seen it before. They apparently like to put lighter fluid on their arms, hands, tongue, or shoes and light it up while trying to put it out. It's apparently hip with the kids to do that, and it's probably a side effect of the marihuanna poisoning or something.

But I still can't get over how I can't buy a three inch piece of string without an I.D., what kind of spiritually dead human being would actually put an age limit on a three inch piece of string. WOW! That just ain't right. I didn't get carded for that knife, Zippo, lottery ticket, or cigar I bought the other night, but then again it was one of those Mexican markets, not sure if other states have them, it's probably just a California thing.

Anyway, sorry if I tend to go on rants sometimes!
